Phasing out of naps... lord help me...

So my 2 yr 4 mo old is no longer taking consistent naps.  For the last month there's been at least 1 day a week that she skips it altogether.  Now we're only taking them 3-4 times a week.

Lord help me... I don't like this transition.  I never know what day she's going to sleep and so I can't make any plans.  And frankly, I just want that break in the afternoon.  :(     I'd send her to her room but today that ended w/ her screaming and carrying on and I just didn't want the battle today.

So here we are watching Toy Story 2 in the dark hoping that she'll snooze on the sofa for a few.  I don't like 13-14 hr days without a break!  No fair!!

  • we are going through this as well. I really like that break in the middle of the day to get somethings done. Ugh.

  • DS went through that around the same time.  It was painful. . . and sad to lose the nap! He almost never naps now unless there is a LONG car ride involved, though sometimes he is awake through those.  He goes to bed really early now, though.

I totally panicked when I read this.  In the back of my mind I must have known that being a SAHM it would happen, but 2.5 years old seems so soon.  I guess I was thinking they would keep napping until they started school.  I am so naive (and I admit it)

  • I'm sorry. This has been my world for 2.5 years. B cut her nap at age 2. E was 20 months.

The good thing is that their bedtime is 7pm (sometimes they're exhausted at 6:30pm). It's my only saving grace.

  • This is right around the corner and I am NOT looking forward to it.  DD is starting to drop naps here and there, while always before she was the most consistent sleeper.  Ack!  I was really hoping she would keep taking them until she turned 3 and started pre-school in the mornings.  Even just an hour does so much for my mental health.

  • It took one week of no napping to decide to send DD to preschool. I was set against it until I realized I needed a break during the day, especially when we are up at 6am every morning.

  • This is my fear!  DD will be about that age when the twins arrive. I am going to need her to nap during the day. I can't imagine if she chooses that time to give up her nap.
  • Ugh, I definitely relate as Emily went through several "no nap" phases that made me feel like a prisoner to her moods & exhaustion.

I have to stress that you DON'T GIVE UP just yet... it very well could be a phase and the nap could reappear, like it did for us!  Emily napped over a year after I was certain she had given up the afternoon nap.

Just keep being consistent with trying to put her down for a nap, maybe allow her to have books or a favorite toy in her bed with her, and maybe even remind her of a reward (a trip to the park, her favorite snack, an art project, heck... even a gummy bear!) she will get after nap time is over.  This worked wonders for us!

Good luck, it's not easy but it's not over yet... hopefully!  ;)
