2nd Trimester

going to be a bridesmaid... dress size???

Hello :)

So... I am supposed to be in a wedding in August... I'll be between 24-25 weeks pregnant at the time. We had to order our dresses already (silly dress shops). I am a size 6 right now at 13 weeks... tried on a size 8 and determined it felt pretty big on me and that if I end up carrying low I would definitely have some room for baby bump to grow. If I carry high... who knows - I might be in trouble.

This is the dress. The bow will be tied in the back thank goodness! There is of course no room in the seams for the dress to be let out... and I was told that if in a few weeks I decide that the 8 might not fit me at the time of the wedding after all, I can return and reorder as long as they have at least 6 weeks notice. I'd have to let them know sooner, of course, so I can get someone to alter it for me.

What do you think? This is my first, and I've heard that with the first pregnancy you don't normally show as much or as quickly... but I'm a little worried that I'll just suddenly pop at week 22 or something.

Thanks!

Re: going to be a bridesmaid... dress size???

  • For me, personally, with that style dress, there is no way I could just order one size bigger and have it work at 24-25 weeks pregnant. I would need room for a belly at that point, and that wouldn't give room.

ETA: Also, I don't know how I could wear any size of that dress and it work (the style just wouldn't work for me pregnant). If it fit my belly it would be way too big everywhere else. But that's just me.

  • 20+ weeks was about when I popped the first time around.  Oh and Im in a wedding when I am 36 weeks.  Wedding is Sep and dress shop made us order dresses in January.  I literally just found out I was pg.

  • The dress shop should be able to offer you some advice, based on their past experiences, as to what size you should be.

Your doctor also may be able to estimate how big you'll be in inches and you can convert that to dress size.

  • Honestly I'd recommend getting a maternity style BM dress.  I was just a BM in my friends wedding at 24 weeks and I couldn't have worn that.  I just ordered the dress a size larger (which actually ended up being too big and had to be brought in) but it was maternity.  You are going to need room in the tummy!
  • Um, I think you are going to have to redesign the dress a bit.  That sash/bow is going to have to go above the bump, not around your waist ... you will have no waist.

To be safe I would probably go up to a size 10 so you have belly room and material to work with to have some major alterations done.  Or see if there is a maternity option that is similar in style.

  • I'm not thinking that's a dress you want to wear when you should be obviously pregnant.  I'd think you'd want something with an empire waist.  Do all the bride's maids have to have the same dress?  I let mine pick out any dress from David's in apple.  After some gnashing of teeth, my sister is doing the same for her's, as there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to wear her chosen dress at 36+ weeks.
  • I just tried on a bridesmaid dress for a wedding i am in november. I will be 6 weeks post delivery for the wedding and at 20 weeks the dress I tried on was a full 3 sizes bigger than I normally wear (used to be a 4 this dress was a 10) and I couldn't get it zipped up around my bump. It is my first pregnancy and now I am 22 weeks and I think i look alot bigger than 2 weeks ago. So i would error on the side of way to big because unlike fat the bump can't really be squeezed down any smaller.

  • I would talk to your bride about getting a maternity dress instead. you could get a simple empire waist dress and get a sash for it to match the other girls. If I got that dress to fit in the belly, it would be way too big in the chest, and i have huge boobs. I'm sure your bride will understand. It's not like you can help it!

Be careful with this, I took the dress shop's advice and ordered 3 sizes up for a wedding I'm in 6 weeks from now, the dress basically has to be remade it's so huge on me, I begged them to let me order just 2 sizes up and they pressured me into 3 sizes and it's seriously a tent on me, I'm so mad at them.

  • Wow thank you all so much! I'm thinking I have to call Davids and tell them to cancel the 8, I need a 10...

I would consider asking the bride if I can wear a different dress, but she already has so much going on and so many people nagging her about every detail of her wedding, I don't want to cause her any more stress :(

Of course this dress does not come in maternity style... nor could I find one that was similar in style... yet.

neferhathor - yeah, the 8 is already too big in the chest for me!

The bow is a little deceiving, too - the ruched part (waist) really doesn't cover the whole belly - just a few inches below the bust. I didn't even think about not being able to wear the bow, but you're right - I probably won't be able to! Yeah, defnitely not being the best dress for pregnancy... :(

    Thanks everyone!

I'm normally between a two and a four and my bff just had to order me a size eight (gulp) for her wedding in mid July. It was hard to accept, but the reasoning makes sense: it's easier to take something in than it is to add fabric to a dress.

I was there last weekend to try on the dress my sister picked out.  The dress person's suggestion was to get a pillow and see how the dress would fit.  In order to get a dress to fit me currently at 21 weeks, I had to try on a 24 when I'm normally a 14/16.  The 24 had so much extra material everywhere that it was going to be a pain to have it fixed.  She then suggested that I order in in a 28 or a 30.  At this point we had a discussion about how it would be easier to get a maternity dress, and I found one in size 16 that might still fit, and ordered it in an 18.

That dress is NOT going to be forgiving. Your ribs are going to expand as well. You'd be better off with empire waist or something that's at least loose in the waist.

  • I would go at least 2 sizes up, plan to get alterations and always cheaper to make a dress smaller than bigger!
  • For my wedding, my SIL was just about 27 weeks pregnant and just bought a dress 3 sizes up. She had it altered I think the week before and it worked out just fine. There was a sash on the dress to tie into a bow too and it worked out just fine.

  • I'm sorry, but I do not see a bubble dress with an "at waist" waist to work when you are 20-something weeks pregnant.  I think you should talk to the bride and see if she can find something similar which is a maternity style from David's in that color.
  • How tall are you? I'm 21 weeks now and although I can tell I'm pregnant and have to wear maternity clothes, I don't think other people can tell at all. The 10 might work for you if you are like me and show later. Also, David's Bridal has a belly pillow they can strap on you that will add a couple months of pregnancy onto your belly. You can wear it higher to see what the dress would look like if you are carrying high, or lower if you're carrying lower.

I hope you find something that works for you!

Oh, I know about the belly pillow because I went to try on dresses for my friend's wedding that's in August. I'll be about 32 weeks pregnant and usually wear a 10. The difference between 8 weeks and 12 weeks (I tried on dresses both those weeks) was one size in my bust. Everything else fit the same. I ended up ordering a 16 (super gulp!) because I was worried about my bust being too big for the dress. The dress she picked out is an empire waist dress though.

  • i'm in a wedding in Aug and i'll be 32wks. i orginal a size 12 but i ordered a 21 b/c i was huge with my DS!! i rather have to much than not enough. (thats a cute dress) I personally would of gone a few more sizes bigger it's better to have to much than none at all.

  • I am 24 weeks now and there is no way I could wear a dress that is only a size bigger.

One thing to keep in mind when you try on bm dresses in the store is they are usually stretched out from so many people trying them on. If it "fit" in the store, I'd still order a size bigger for myself if I wasn't pregnant.

I'm in a wedding 6 weeks post baby and I ordered about 3 dress sizes bigger. I have no idea what my boobs will be like and it's better to take the dress in than have it be too small. I'd definitely go with a couple sizes bigger than not enough.

(When I tried on the bm dress I was at about 16/17 weeks. In my "normal" size I would wear, it was big everywhere by the belly. There's no way by this time only one size bigger would work. Just my 2 cents.)

  • Oh...I failed to mention that I agree with PP's in seeing if she'll let you order a maternity dress in a similar color/material. Totally worth it.
