Baby Names

Can we name our son this?

We have gone back and forth with boys names.  Our son's name is Maverick so if this one's a boy, the name needs to be unique.  Well, we were on a date last night and were going through sports teams just for fun...and both loved Duke.  Would that be silly?  Or cute?

Re: Can we name our son this?

  • hmmmm.... personally, I would put it as a MN if using it.  DH has a traditional first name but goes by his MN which is pretty unique (Cartwright)

  • You can name your son whatever you like! :) I'm not a huge fan of Duke...but that is just me. I recently met a little boy named Dash and thought it was adorable! Maverick is very cool, do you use a nn with him?
  • I know a Duke so I don't see why not!

  • I think together they are a little much.  Mavericks is a team mascot and Duke has sports teams.  What if the boys aren't into sports?

  • Just as long as if you have a little girl later you do not name her Carolina! LOL!

Duke does remind me of a dog's name- though. So personally I wouldn't do it but maybe just cause its NMS.

  • I think Duke and Maverick go very well together.
  • I hate to say it, but Duke reminds me of "taking a duke". Just sayin'. But, honestly I don't absolutely hate it. It could be cute.

    I agree!!!

  • I think it would be ok as a kid (totally nms), but wouldn't really "grow" with him.

  • I know at least one Duke and I really like it!  I also think that it goes well with your first son's name.

    I agree!!!

This isn't necessarily a compliment. I agree that they go well together, but sound lower class imo.

  • I know 3 Duke's...they are all dogs!
  • I had a horse named Duke when I was a kid.
  • You should go with Goose... Gooseman... or Iceman!!

Stick with the Top Gun theme... lol.

I'm sorry.  Maverick just isn't my style, neither is Duke.  I like more traditional names for boys.  (David, Paul, Michael, etc...)  They will eventually grow up and have those names on a business card one day, so I don't want to make them oddballs.

  • Sorry, I don't like Duke at all (reminds me of a dog). I like the other poster's suggestion of Drake. My friend's little boy is Drake and I think it's adorable. And works well with Maverick. GL!

Maybe not- may just be on a nametag.

This is entirely off topic, but I was just mentioning to my husband how I haven't seen anyone use Cartwright!  I think it's awesome!

  • I always think of the 2nd definition of Maverick, so why not continue on that theme and name your second son Rebel?

n.1. An unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, traditionally considered the property of the first person who brands it.2. One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter.adj.Being independent in thought and action or exhibiting such independence: maverick politicians; a maverick decision.[Possibly after Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803-1870), American cattleman who left the calves in his herd unbranded .]
  • I'm so sorry, but I completely think of a dog with the name "Duke", specifically the one on the commercial for Busch's Baked Beans.  With that said, name your kid what you want- it's YOUR kid!  Most people don't like my name choices, but we haven't ruled them out Big Smile
