s/o twin beds

Since we're all about cribs and beds today...

DD is still sleeping on a mattress and boxsprings on the floor. I meant to get her a bed for her 3rd birthday, but that day is rapidly approaching and I have not made a decision. I've been focusing on daybeds.

I like the look of the IKEA Hemnes daybed in white. But I'm balking at paying $400 for mdf, plus new mattresses. I've heard mixed things about whether or not a regular twin mattress will fit on it.

I thought about getting a Casey daybed, and it has good reviews, but it's $700 and I'd rather not spend that right now.

We looked at a mate's bed at Big Lots which I think is the same one as on Overstock, but it's weight limit is 200lbs and we like to get in bed with her to read stories and DH is scared it'll collapse under him one night.

Now I'm looking at craigslist and found a possibility there too for $250 but I'd have to paint it.

We went to Gallery furniture, but the one style I liked only comes in black and I need white.

I really want one with a trundle or storage underneath, mostly just so toys and things don't go disappearing under the bed.

So, tell me about your kid's twin bed. Love it? Hate it? Why?

  • I noticed JC Penney has some really cute ones. Both day bed style or regular twin style (both with trundle or storage options) & in white!

  • Maren has the Hemnes in white.  Blake has the Hemnes in black.

I love these beds.  They are super practical, look really cute, and have been very durable.  Maren's is a little over 3 years old and is still solid as a rock.  Blake has only had his for a bit over a month, but he beats the crap out of it and it's still perfect.

The cool thing about the Hemnes is that you get extra storage AND the expandability of a trundle.  Because the trundle pulls out and becomes flush with the main part of the bed, the bed converts to a king bed when you need it.  But you still have the drawer space for clothes, toys, etc.  (You do need a second mattress for when it's pulled out, but it's not required if you don't plan to ever expand the bed.)

I know you have your concerns with price, but when I shopped trundles - I couldn't find anything nearly as affordable or as cute as what IKEA offered.

We did.  It was easiest to just buy it all together, and I like their mattresses.  Looking at the bed though, I don't see why any twin mattress wouldn't fit.  If you have a mattress already and want to give me the measurements, I'm more than happy to measure our bed to make sure it would fit.

  • I'm confused -- how can it both be a trundle and have storage drawers underneath?  the ikea listing doesn't really help with any sort of explanation...

If you look at the brown version you can see how it works. Basically the whole thing pulls out, drawers too. On top of the drawers are slats. The only odd thing is that there's no room for a mattress when it's slid back in. The extra mattress has to sit on top of the other mattress.

I got mine from JC Penney online. Free shipping to the store and there's always a discount code and ebates for that place.  I think we paid about $200 or so for the bed and then another $100 or so for the trundle.  The whole family sits on her bed with no issues, but we have a bunkie board (not box spring) under the mattress to support it.

We're not planning on getting nice twin beds until Ally is older and they both share a room together.  Then I want them to have matching beds with complimenting bedding.
