Well, all else has failed and I said I would never let DS CIO. I guess Ferber isn't really CIO though. We have tried so many other things...No cry sleep solution = no sleep, rocking or nursing DS to sleep then putting him in his crib = no sleep, letting him sleep in our bed = sleep for DS but none for the parents, so we are at our wits end and I ordered Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems. I actually can't wait to get the book to see if this will work for us. I feel horrible every night when he is crying and soothing him just won't work and the lack of sleep is making me crazy. If this method works, I will be one happy camper. If it doesn't, I'll pass the book onto someone else.
Re: we will be ferberzing...let the flames begin!
LOL No in a few weeks right around 4 months I will probably do ferber too.
We did the same for DS around 4-5 months, and he's sttn ever since (with some re-training needed after an illness or schedule mis-up). As long as you follow the structured method and not let him CIO for hours with no interference from you, I have no flames
No flames here... Ferber is the best thing ever!! I was exactly the same as you when I had my first DD almost 4 years ago. I was all about how I'd never let her cry it out and how cruel it was... blah, blah, blah. So easy to say until baby won't sleep more than an hour or two stretch at almost 7 months and you have to spend hours in between getting them to bed. That wasn't good for me and it wasn't good for her either.
So, I read up on CIO methods and decided I could do Ferber because at least I could check on her periodically.
It was the BEST thing we ever did for her and for ourselves. I won't lie to you... the first night stunk. It was SO hard letting her cry but I checked on her after 5 minutes, then 10, than every 15 and in about an hour she was peacefully asleep and stayed that way most of the night. The next night it took us maybe 30 minutes start to finish. By the third night I didn't even have to go back in once and from then on she was a fantastic sleeper.
And when things would throw her off track like an illness or teething I'd get her through the few nights she needed me and once she was better a quick "ferber refresher" put her right back on schedule.
We started it with DD2 around 5 months and again it worked like a charm.
DS 2 is generally a terrific sleeper so it remains to be seen if we'll have to do it with him but it is great to know that if we need it the option is there.
Best of luck to you . I hope you have the same fast success we did!
DS wasn't sleeping well when he had an ear infection, but that was the only clue he gave us that there was something wrong. Just an idea to look into.
But yeah, do what you have to do!
We did it. First night was super hard. Worked like a charm, though and LO STTN I would say 9 out of 10 nights. From time to time, there may be a little hiccup and we just tend to his needs at that time and then get right back to the schedule. Good Luck.
I just bought this book but am only on Chapter 2. DS used to only get up once or twice a night which was great...now its at least 5 - 7 times and the only thing that will get him back down is the boob. I'm anxious to read the chapter on stretching out nighttime feedings.
Does anyone know if the method can still be used if LO does still need to eat once a night? I"m fine with doing that, even twice. But up every hour or two is getting to be a bit much.
No flames! Every night I tell myself that I will ferberize very soon...it gets me through, knowing that there will be an end to this madness soon!
I'm ordering the book....
