I need appetizer suggestions

We're having a small, casual barbecue on Saturday and doing the usual menu -- burgers and dogs.  We're serving them with sweet potato fries and coleslaw.  I'm making mini swirl cheesecake things and chocolate-dipped bananas for dessert.  So far for appetizers, I'm making chips and guacamole (one of my specialties) and some marinated mushrooms.  I need another substantial appetizer.  Do you have any favorites?

  • I LOVE veggie pizza on the kraftfoods.com website.

I love different types of bruschetta. But that doesn't seem to fit in at all with your menu.

You seem to have all food categories but fruit. Maybe a tossed fruit salad with a yogurt dressing or if you allow alcohol a prosecco marinade??

  • I usually make Crostinis for any gathering I have and they are always a hit.  Cheese and crackers platter is easy to serve and nibble on for guests.

Good point.  Maybe I'll add that to the menu with either dessert or the main course.

  • No suggestions...but the sweet potato fries sound really good right now.

  • A really easy one is to take tortillas, chive cream cheese, and ham slices. Spread cream cheese on a tortilla, put a piece of ham on top, then roll up the tortilla, wrap it in plastic, put it in the refridgerator to get cold. Then before you serve them, remove the plastic and cut into 1 inch slices (think pinwheels). These are really good and fulfilling.

PP mentioned veggie pizza which is easy as well. My mom uses the can of crescents and just lays them down on a cookie sheet as one whole (she pushes the seems together ---you could also use the pizza crust can). Then she bakes the dough. She spreads the chive cream cheese over the top, then puts finely chopped veggies on top. She puts it in the fridge to chill and then cuts into squares right before serving. This one is so good and filling as well.

  • I've been craving this caramelized onion dip.  I made it once and it was so good!

Also, our group of friends always makes bacon wrapped dates and they are gone in no time.  Buy the package of dried pitted date, cut in half.  Buy a package of maple bacon, cut the slices in thirds.  Wrap bacon around the date, secure with a tooth pick, bake in the oven at 350 until crispy turning once.

You can also slice the dates, stuff with a little goat cheese and wrap with 1/2 a slice of bacon.  It's a little more time consuming.  Best thing is you can make them the day before and then just throw them in the oven right before people come over.

  • I love the spinach and artichoke hot dip or the buffalo chicken dip. So yummy.

I also like bacon wrapped jalapenos with the cream cheese filling.

All are easy and don't take too much time/effort to put together.

  • Stuffed jalapenos if you like spicy-- Slice jalapenos in half, take the seed and the ribs out, and stuff with cream cheese and top with baco bits. Stick in the oven until the jalapenos get soft.

    Also, deviled eggs.
