Pregnant after 35

Who with grey hairs is still dyeing their roots?

This is a a topic that I learned after becoming pregnant where the jury is out on the definitive risks.  I decided not to color my greys during my first trimester and while going through the all the "joys" of the beginning of pregnancy, seeing my roots show was very distressing to me. I was a mess.  My natural color is dark, reddish brown and vain or not, at 40 years young, I have known myself for a long time with my particular color of hair.  As I have not necessarily felt my age at all, getting married and soon becoming pregnant has aged me, and my grey hair, I feel, has contributed to this.  Since being able to color my grey roots with the okay from my doctor in this second trimester, I really do feel more like myself again.  Granted, my energy level has incresed and life is a bit more normal, too, since week 12.  I will admit, though, that even with the okay from my doctor and reading that Dr. Oz has also said that the risks of coloring hair while pregnant are not documented, I am only using a demi-permanent dye that has no ammonia which gradually washes out.  I figure being a little "safe" won't hurt and also allow my grey hair to gradually grow out to a point where I can decide whether to go "au natural" or not.  Thanks for listening.....

Re: Who with grey hairs is still dyeing their roots?

  • I was on the ball with this donor cycle and had my roots dyed right before my donor's ER. My hair has been holding up so far and I will definitely make it to my second trimester looking decent. I forgot to ask my OB about dye today but knowing her (and how I don't like her) she'll probably say no altogether. I may try to get foils instead and see how that looks.

I called my doctor at 7 weeks when I had an appointment  with my stylist, he said fine.   I also dyed my hair through my first, and DS has hit all his milestones on time, very normal kid.    If you feel better, then continue to do it.  There's a lot to be said for a happy mom.

  • I haven't been dyeing my hair, and I look bad!  I look like an old lady with pimples.  My hair is dark, so the gray hair is really obvious.  My hair also grows really fast.  I think I'm going to wait until the first trimester is over, though.  I've gone this far looking like an old lady, I might as well keep on going.
  • I've been dyeing my hair.  My hair grows chia pet fast and grey starts showing 3 weeks after I get it done.  I tried to go for as long as I could, but I started to look and feel like Cruella DeVille!

  • I had gotten my roots done just before I found out.  This is my second pregnancy and my first son is 11 now. The hair color thing is a new phenomenon since 12 year ago when I was preggers last time (or I just didnt know about it). I colored the hell out of my hair with cheap home kits the whole time I was pregnant in 1998. Didn't know it was supposed to be "bad". It was only after reading these message boards when I was TTC that I found out it was a no-no.

My 11 year old is better than perfectly fine. Straight A's, a state champion swimmer etc. I have a hard time believing that coloring you hair can have a significant effect on the fetus. HOWEVER, I am still putting off getting my roots done until the second trimester, as well as changed all my skin care to nothing with nasties in it, and don't eat raw sushi. So I guess what I am saying is "better safe than sorry".

If you are doing the right thing for you and baby, then it is the right thing to do.

  • I have horrible roots....and although I didn't color during my 1st tri, I am going every 5 weeks now. I am 38 and have had gray hair since my 20s. I have religiously colored since I was 15. My doctor said it was fine (although she said to skip coloring during 1st tri).
  • I didn't know I was preggers when I colored my hair at home a few week ago. My grays are showing through again now and need to be touched up badly. I'll probably wait a couple more weeks until I hit the 2nd trimester
  • I dye my hair and will continue to. My doctor (and my doctor friends) all laugh at the idea that hair dye is bad.

Maybe 25 years ago when they used super harsh chemicals. Not so much now.

But as always, to each their own.

  • I am not but I don't think it is a huge deal if you do it. I have come this far so I will wait until the baby is here-- it's funny, because I break all kinds of other rules.. but I just feel like hair dye is pretty harsh and for me.. i'm going to wait. I have the hair dye bought and ready to go. I have 7 more weeks to go so I might as well wait all the way til the end. I will also be bleaching my teeth so it will be a nice post partum pick me up :)

I agree.  I continue to get foils with highlights and low-lights.

I'm 39 and have been coloring my hair regularly since my early 20s.  I stopped though when I got pg and haven't colored my hair at all even though it's REALLY GREY now and I'm in the 2nd tri now.  My hesitation is that there have been some limited studies that show that there is a link between hair dye and autism.  I wouldn't worry about it except that DH's niece and cousin both have it.  I hate the way my hair looks right now, and our kid may get autism no matter what I do, but I just decided that I'd rather live with grey than guilt.  This isn't meant as judgement for people who do color their hair.  There's so little research at this point, that I really do think that everyone has to make their own decision.  This is just how I've approached it.

  • I usually do foils and then toner on my hair. My stylist is the one that said the toner is harsh. If I don't use the toner my hair looks way to bleached and washed out. So I've been living with the grays. I'm the one woman in my family where the grays didn't start really young. My mom started getting them at 18, my sister in her early 20's, and I didn't start till I turned 30. It really wasn't so bad in the first couple of trimesters, but now it's showing really bad. My hair has grown out so much. BUT, I only have a few more weeks left 'till my scheduled cesarian, so I can handle waiting a bit longer.

  • Popping in from Parenting after 35 to say I posted a similar topic when I was first pregnant. I made it to 11.5 weeks before I dyed my hair (lots of white/gray and not so much brown anymore) before I went out of town on a business trip. I dyed my hair throughout my entire pregnancy and my DS is perfectly healthy.

While he was born with a hydrocele (fluid in his scrotum) it was unrelated and resolved by the time he was 5 months old.
