NTTCR: Did your parents censor your reading?

There is a discussion on MM right now about this.

Were you a "mature" reader?

I certainly was. I read Pillars of the Earth when I was 12, and that same year I started reading VC Andrews books...they were like smutty crack for me. I could still point out all the dirty parts from PotE. Lots of historical fiction as well...therefore, more smut.

I still read Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley, RL Stine books through my teens, as well as Anne of Green Gables/Little House on the Prairie books (I still read these yearly) but man, I read a lot of "adult" books as a kid!

Did anyone else do this? Do you think you will censor your kids reading, or go on a case-by-case basis?

Re: NTTCR: Did your parents censor your reading?

  • Nope, my parents never censored my reading.  I also read VC Andrews books at a young age.  Whew! I read Crimes of the Heart in middle school too, but I originally started reading it b/c it took place in NC (either that, or the movie was filmed here, I can't remember).

I also read the book "Forever..." by Judy Blume, which seems safe enough, but it was very graphic and it's all about sex.  After I finished it, I passed around to all my friends!  LOL

No, I don't think I'll censor my children's reading, as long as they're not reading straight-up porn.  I do think I'll try to read some of the things they read though, just so that we can talk about the books and whatever they contain.  My parents never did that, and I think it would've been nice if they had.  Not just to discuss adult topics and things like that, but just to discuss the themes in the books in general.

  • No, I read whatever was in our school's library. We had a reading point system and I tried to get as many points as possible. I LOVED the Little House on the Prairie books too!

  • My mom did not censor my reading. There were a couple of books that I remember her reading AFTER I had read them and saying that she wished she hadn't let me read them.

I would be less likely to censor my phantom child's reading than R so I'm sure there will be disagreements.  Therefore, I'd like to say we'd go on a case-to-case basis.

  • Maybe my reading was censored?!? I read a lot as a child/teen and can't remember reading anything even close to naughty. So maybe it was and I didn't realize it?!?! Ha ha..

As far as my kids go- I think that it would probably have to be on a case by case basis.

  • No, I read what I wanted. I don't think my parents really looked at what I was reading anyways. Then again, i don't recall reading adult books until I was in Junior high or so.

  • I was trying to think of a book that my my was upset that I read.  I read "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer" (a Twin Peaks book) when I was 13.  We had been big fans of the show, so she really didn't think anything of it.  It was extremely adult.  Lots of sex, violence, and drugs.  Crazy stuff.  When she read it, she was mortified.  Oops.  :-)

  • My parents did not censor my reading at all, but they did for my younger siblings.  I was reading Stephen King books in 7th grade and I remember being totally shocked at all the sex!

  • No, I was an avid reader and went through everything I was supposed to read at my age (whatever age it might have been) and so quickly that I went right on to reading more adult-themed books. I do remember reading plenty of books that had sex in them and it only made me want to read more! lol

    My parents censored everything!!

I had the usual Baby Sitters Club and Sweet Valley High but when Sweet Valley University came out that was a big no-no.

Saturday Night Live, In Living Color, MTV, 90210, Party of Five, you name it I wasn't allowed to watch it.

  • My parents tried to censor my reading. They're very religious, and were even more back then and we were new to the U.S. from Puerto Rico (1989). When I was a little older and started reading the R.L. Stine books they had a fit because they were demonic, lol. That just made me leave them in my desk at school, but I didn't stop reading. I know R.L. Stine's books are harmless, but the point is that kids are going to read what they want. I think parents need to go on a case by case basis and maybe explain why they don't want them to read certain books, but even then you shouldn't stifle your kid's desire to read.

  • Oh man, I don't think my parents had any idea what I was reading.  I loved "Valley of the Horses" by Jean Auel and there were super-graphic sex scenes in that.  That's just one example!  It's like porn for girls.

I think I will try to leave it alone unless it's really inappropriate, like a porn star memoir or something.

  • My parents didn't censor my reading at all, but I remember my mom finding out that I was reading romance novels in middle school and she was very disappointed in me.  I still read the Babysitter Club books a lot.  Also, when I got to high school I had a friend in band that got me hooked on Laurell K Hamilton (before she turned to almost porn like writing).  My favorite book that I read in middle school though was Jane Eyre.

No, my reading was not censored at.all. Neither was my TV for that matter. My mom encouraged me to read The World According to Garp and a young age (around 12 or so I believe) and when I started reading it, I was horrified. However, to this day, it is still my favorite book. No idea why she let me read it though. It was actually on the summer reading list in high school, and it sure was interesting to write that book report! Haha.

Love that book.  I don't think I read it until I was 18 or 19 though.

  • Nope, could read whatever I wanted. Was mostly also true for TV.  I had two older brothers who wanted to watch scary movies when I was really little which meant that I had nightmares for years about gremlins and critters.  I still have them occasionally.  I read a lot of John Grisham and Michael Crichton when I was a kid.  I love Jane Eyre.

Those sex scenes were totally formative for me too! But I think I would approve my daughters reading them (hypothetical future daughters, that is) because female pleasure is so central.

  • No way! Not censored at all - my parents had all sorts of literature on their bookshelf - Lolita, Henry Miller visiting prostitutes in Paris, etc. - I was allowed to read it all. Of course, I eventually got a Master's in English, so maybe it was a good thing. Ironically, my mom *wouldn't* let me read "Sweet Valley High" because she said it was for airheads. I secretly wanted to read that stuff so badly, and now I'm a Sookie Stackhouse addict, probably the adult equivalent. I think balance is good, and I'll probably read what my kids read so we can talk about it.

that is hilarious!  it sounds like something i would do.  in 8th grade i read a SVH book and while giving an oral book report, said that i could probably write a SVH book myself, it was that lame.  to this day, i'm pretty anti-fluff.  no chick-lit for me.

my parents didn't censor my reading, but there was a ton of tv and movies i wasn't allowed to watch.  i read so much (probably a book every day or two) it was likely too much of a pain to censor!

Yep, it's fantastic. I was very disappointed in the movie though...

  • My parents never censored what I read.  My mom encouraged me to read everything & for quite awhile (junior & high school) we passed books back & forth.  I did read in my age group, but mostly outside of it.  We spent a LOT of time at the library.

DH isn't really a reader and he always tells me he wishes he could be.  I'm trying to get him interested in using my Nook, but no luck so far.  Anyhow, with my love of books & DH wishing he loved books I don't forsee us censoring our future kids.
