how to sterilize playtex drop in nurser bottles & other ?'s

My friend has given me a bunch of BPA free playtex drop in nursers (I have obviously bought all brand new nipples).

Do I need to sterilize the nursers before I use them or just the nipples?

I have an avent microwave sterilizer-can I use that or just boil on the stove?

Do you sterilize the nipples after each use?

ETA: we do not have a dishwasher-only a microwave or the stove right now.

  • I would just run everything through your dishwasher on whatever 'sanitize' or 'heated' setting you've got.

You don't need to do anything with the liners, obviously.

The nipples - we didn't sterilize after each use.  Just washed with hot soapy water or ran through the dishwasher.

  • Don't put the nursers in the sterilizer! They will get warped. We did this once and learned our lesson. We always ran our nipples through the sterilizer adn the liners are already sterile so you are set.

  • I washed the bottle frames by hand the first time before use -- ditto not boiling since they will warp. Bottle warmers will warp them too, so the Avent microwave thing might do the same thing.

For nipples, I sterilized the first time using a medela microwave bag that they make for pump parts. I wash them in soapy water each night and usually try to remember to throw them in the bag with my pump parts once a week to sterilize.

  • I just boiled the nipples the 1st time, and handwashed after that.

This! Except we sterilize nipples in the bag everyday.
