The SAHM Book Club Weekly Check- In

Welcome,
Our Book Club is open to anyone, at anytime, who would simply like to set a reading goal for the year, keep track of what they have read so far, read up on reviews of books everyone else is reading and make your own recommendations.  You can read whatever you want, this is not a traditional book club where we select & discuss a book as a group! For anyone who'd like to participate in these weekly check-ins and join our Google Document Tracker, reply to this post with:*Your 2010 reading goal ("X" number of books you will read this year)*How many books you have read so far*What you are currently reading*Any books you'd like to recommendOnce you read the book that was on your "currently reading" list from the previous check-in or if you toss that book aside and switch gears, be sure to mention it in these weekly check-ins as that is how I update the spreadsheet.
Shout-outs and questions from me
  • Congratulations, Toutoute for meeting your 2010 of 12 books!!!  Do you want to set a new goal?

Re: The SAHM Book Club Weekly Check- In

  • Hi ladies!

So sorry this check-in is so late in the day, it's been a long, crazy day for us with all this dang rain!  argh!

Anywho, I have yet to pick back up Dear John and I'm not sure why.  I did however blow through Babyproofing Your Marriage and... meh, wasn't 100% impressed.  Lots of generalizing of husband's behavior (not all husbands are clueless, refuse to help around the house, travel, are incapable of changing a diaper, etc.), "man bashing", and the language was very "dumbed down", which I can't stand!  The chapters, if you can even call them that, were poorly organized... I actually had no clue what I had read about, was currently reading about, nor what I was about to read about.  Zero structure, no real outline and I'm just way too Type A for that.  I also feel like the book was a total moot point lost on me as a "Veteran" parent now nearly 4 years in and might have provided a wee bit of insight had I read it in the first 6-8 weeks of being a brand new mom.

If you can read this book for FREE from a friend or the Library and you are a brand new first-time mom, this might be a decent book for ya!  If not, skip it!

I am picking back up The 5 Love Languages this week and hope to finish the last half!

Wow!  I really liked Babyproofing Your Marriage.  However bringing Parker home really shattered any sort of relationship DH and I had for a long, long time (for reasons other than bringing home a baby).  Like you, reading it BEFORE having Parker would have been much more helpful.

I read it while pg with Rowan and I was surprised how many things they said reflected our thoughts or feelings with Parker.  Luckily, none of those things happened with Rowan and we settled into parents of 2 pretty easily.

I do understand what you're saying about the structure of chapters.  It was a little bit all over the place.

At any rate- I'm reading The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown.  I've read all his books so when I was able to borrow this one from my uncle I jumped on it.  It's a typical Dan Brown book.  Intriguing and interesting with a fair amount of suspense.

I'm also reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.  This is a much, much slower book that centers around a group of immigrants during the industrial revolution.  It's sort of horrific but a good read.

I finished Elizabeth and her German Garden and am now reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac.
  • I am reading Eclipse now.  Can't wait to finish the series so I can start reading other things.  My list is growing and growing!

  • I didn't finish Dear John, but I put it down because it wasn't really holding my attention.

Now I'm reading Columbine by Dave Cullen. This book is amazing. If you haven't read it, you should. He is the expert on the Columbine shooting. I'm only 150 pages in and what I thought I knew is all wrong.

  • Morning!!

I am still reading "Tired All the Time" and am also reading "Careers for Bookworms"

Wanted to add that I picked up 3 books at a flea market this weekend and cannot wait to read them... the sequels to the Clan of the Cave Bear.

  • Good Morning!

I finished Dear John. It was a very easy read for me. I recommend it to those who like a good love story. My next book will be Eat, Pray, Love.

Next Monday I won't be checking in because I'll be in Hawaii, celebrating our 5 year anniversary.  Any suggestions on a good beach book?

Don't be reading a book on vacation!!  I could think of a million things better to do---including laying in bed with my H!! Wink

I finished Dear John, but I thought it was very predictable and not one of his better books.  So, IMO, you didn't miss much.

I'm going to add Columbine to my to be read list.  Sounds interesting.  Thanks for the rec.

I finished Revolutionary Road and was pretty disappointed in it.  I felt it was very slow moving and repetitive.  Also, I know the story was supposed to have taken place in the 1950's and it was a much different time then, but the way the wives were so subservient/ass kissers to their husbands really irked me.

  • Oh, and I forgot to say that I am currently reading Between Here and April.  It's my 'Buddy Read' book on the Nest Book Club board.  I'm only about 65 pages in, but so far, it's pretty good.
  • Just finished both The Red Tent & Friday Night Knitting Club.
  • Sorry it's been awhile since I checked-in.  Not knowing the day of the week changed delayed me even more.  Anyway, here's my list since book 4:

    5. The Bride Collector
Just so you know, this is a murder mystery, not some guy who marries a bunch of times.
    6. ST:DS9 Mission Gamma Book 3, Cathedral
    7. ST:DS9 Mission Gamma Book 4, Lesser Evil
The Mission Gamma books took me some time to get into, mostly I think b/c many of the characters were new (not from the TV series), therefore harder to imagine and have any feelings for.
    8. Percy Jackson & The Olympians - The Lightening Thief
Took me awhile to adjust to the story being told from that of an adolescent learning different kid, but once I got past that I really enjoyed the novels.
    9. ST:DS9 Rising Son (yes, that's spelled correctly)
I had physical emotional reactions to this book.
    10. Percy Jackson & The Olympians - The Sea of Monsters
    11. Pride & Prejudice
    12. Percy Jackson & The Olympians - The Titan's Curse
    13. Mansfield Park
I had never read this one before, but actually felt for Fannie.
    14. ST: DS9 Unity
I think this was the first Star Trek novel that ever made me tear up.
    15. Percy Jackson & The Olympians - The Battle of the Labyrinth
    currently reading:
    16. Percy Jackson & The Olympians - The Last Olympian

  • I just finished Water for Elephants.  Some parts of the book were difficult to read, especially the parts involving animal abuse.  However, I enjoyed the book overall.
  • I just finished the Reliable Wife, what a great book and very fast read.  I am going to look at all of your suggestions, cause I need a new book NOW!

  • I just finished "Be careful what you pray for" book#13.  I am currently reading "Five quarters of the orange" and I really like this book.  I think I might up my goal to 25 books this year, since I pass my original goal of 12.
  • I have finished 18 books out of my goal of 30 this year.  I am currently reading Her Mother's Hope by Francine Rivers.  It is fabulous, and I highly recommend it.  I am about halfway through right now.  I also just started In Praise of Stay at Home Moms by Dr. Laura Schlessinger.  I'm only a few pages in, so can't give an opinion on that yet.
  • I *finally* finished eat, pray, love..it was ok..I would rec it but I didnt love it..

I just started this book, "the first annual grand prairie rabbit festival"...I read the back and it looked interesting...I'm loving it so far- basically its about a young southern priest who is trying to keep his congregation from joining the new pentacostal church...as a (very) lapsed catholic..i usually dont go for anything with religion but this story is so funny- I;ve been laughing out loud and its a quick read...

I have water for elephants on my nightstand up next...

(I'm also re-reading a little bit each day from eclipse- to get ready for the movie- but I dont count this)

Revolutionary Road is one of the best books I've ever read.  Very well written.

    Columbine sounds great!  Thanks!

I finally finished Tartt's The Little Friend, and while it got good again for the last 50 or so pages, the book as a whole dragged (it didn't need to be over 500 pages!).  It had its charms, but not a favorite.  The Secret History was much better.

I started and am blowing through Alice McDermott's Child of My Heart, and it's FANTASTIC.

  • Oh I want to join!

I will set a goal of 7.5- I say .5 because I am in the middle of reading Luxe. I am new to this SAHM thing so hopefully I can manage to find time to read a book a month.

I would recommend any of the Carnation books by Lauren Willig and the Shopaholic series by Sophia Kinsella. I also really like Phillipa Gregory.

  • I finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.  I loved it, and would recommend it to anyone.  There were a few draggy parts, but so many fascinating details and things to think about.

I am reading The Value of Nothing by Raj Patel, which is kind of a rehash of an Intro to Sociology class so far, but I like the premise, based on Oscar Wilde's saying, "Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing."

  • Hey, Mrs. S :) I was confused on how my lengthy reply was MIA --- then realized somehow last night when I did this I replied to last week instead of this week.  So could you please update from that reply :)

The synopsis is that I have done a whooool bunch of reading.  And since last night I finished the "shes having a baby and I'm hving a meltdown" so chalk that to the "completed" list.

:) TIA Hope you are well.  Glad to see what everyone is reading - need ideas for my library run, although they seem to have a pitiful collection.
