So, my son's first birthday party is Saturday. It's with a bunch of friends in the backyard. Very low-key. It starts at 2 p.m. I originally thought we'd have sandwich wraps, pasta salad, fruit and cake. However, I got the quote from the caterer and he wants to charge me $500!!! Minus the cake! So, that's out. I don't have a lot of help, and I don't want to grill or cook myself. So, if you were going to a party at 2 p.m., would you expect sandwiches/a meal? Or do you think I could get away with having some snacks, veggies, fruit tray and cake? I don't want stress on myself and I don't want to blow the bank!Thank you!!! (i posted this on the parenting board, so if you read it already, sorry..I just need some more responses!)

Re: Menu for my son's birthday party...
How many people are coming? Could you get sandwich wraps at the local grocery store? We did something similar to supplement some food I made for a Super Bowl party once. We had an entire tray of sandwiches, and it was very reasonable. Then you could have fruit, snacks, dips etc.
$500 does seem like a lot!
Holy cow. It depends on your guests. I know my family expects food anytime! But 2pm isn't a 'meal' time, so I think you could get away with just apps.
We had Alaina's party at the park - 30 people. I paid 75 for a chicken nugget party tray from chik fil a, made a pasta salad myself (I have a recipe if you want it), a tray with grapes, strawberries and watermelon, and some bags of chips. Including the tray, we spent less than $200.
We are having DD's birthday party on Saturday at 2:00 as well...
Wow! $500 does seem a bit steep. Due to the time you really don't have to serve a meal; however, I can understand wanting to provide some food.
I would call somewhere like Corner Bakery or a local deli and let them know what you are looking for. I'm not sure how many people you are expecting but I'm sure you can get a few wraps, a pasta salad & a fruit tray for cheaper than that. Or go to your grocery store deli and let them know what you are looking for.
It's a GIRL!!
Ha ha, we are also having our son's birthday party this Saturday, but at 3 instead of 2. I do not think you need to provide a meal. A variety of appetizers + cake + drinks is more than enough. For my son's 1st birthday party last year I ordered a lavosh tray from Safeway and made everything else myself. It was just appetizers like dips, chips, fruit, goldfish (for the kids), etc. I ordered the cake from our wedding cake lady and it was like $30. Do not feel like you have to go overboard on the food!
For our son's 2nd birthday party this Saturday (about 10-12 people, no kids besides him) I am doing 3 appetizers + drinks + ice cream sundaes in lieu of cake.
