Babies: 9 - 12 Months

International travel with LO

This summer we're going to europe for 3 weeks to visit in-laws. DS will be 11 months at that time. There will be a 6 hour time difference, any advice on how to adjust DS's schedule?

Re: International travel with LO

  • You could try to push his schedule back/forward every day to try and get him used to a slight change, but six hours is going to screw him up for at least a little while, no matter what you do.

  • We are headed to London (and then Sri Lanka-10 hours difference!) for several weeks too...we are planning on making changes little by little in the few weeks before we go so hour by hour making adjustments to bedtime/awake time....other than that we will just deal..
  • I'm so happy to hear others are traveling internationally. We're going to Brazil in the fall and people are making me feel like a bad mother...what she gets sick, etc.

As for the time change, I think we'll just deal.

  • We just got back from south africa which is an 8 hour difference. It look my LO about a week to adjust when we went there - he adjusted about an hour a day. I didnt read any books on how to do it so I am not sure if we did it wrong, but this is what we did anyway! I did not try to adjust him before we got there, just did it once we got there. I would put him to bed at his usual bedtime and he would wake up and we would sit quietly in the dark trying not to play with him too much, and then as soon as he got sleepy we would put him down to sleep again. In the morning I woke him up at his usual waking time (7am) and would take him right out into sunshine. He had extra long naps that first week which I limited to 2 hours at a time (usual nap times too) and I would wake him and take him out into the sunshine again. Gradually he got used to it and adjusted. It is quite tough going though.

Coming back West was much easier because the flight was so long and basically he was up for so long by the time he went to bed. I put him to bed at his usual hour, with the usual bedtime routine and he slept like a champ, and was back on track from the first night.

Good luck with the plane ride, I am sure your LO will do amazingly well!

  • We're leaving for Italy next weekend and I'm wondering the same thing!!!!
