2nd Trimester

20 week ultrasound, unable to determine gender...

So we had our 20 week u/s last week and they weren't able to make (an educated) guess at the baby's gender. They were also unable to get some measurements that they needed so we have another one at 24 weeks, has anyone else had this happen and were they later able to tell you the sex?

We didn't have any issues with our u/s at 18 weeks, but, we did have to go back for a 2nd u/s and they were still able to see everything on her just as clearly, but not my cervix (which was the reason for having a 2nd u/s) - LO decided she wanted to sit right on top of it.  Meaning, they had to give me a vaginal u/s.  Ugh.

You're LO was probably just sitting in an odd position and they couldn't get him/her to move.  It is pretty likely that they'll get what they need next time.

  • we were able to tell the sex at our first ultrasound, but unable to get the proper measurements. when we went back 2 weeks later it was a HUGE difference, in 2 short weeks you could see the amazing progress she had made, so chances are you'll get a good look..drink something to get baby moving before you go again :)
  • Because our bundle of joy was pretty much folded in half the gender was easy, but we had to go back to get the readings on the flow in and out of the heart...
  • Same thing happened to us. First ultrasound was at 18 weeks and LO would not cooperate on several pictures. We went back at 22 weeks and LO was more than happy to cooperate. GL!!!!
  • With our first LO we were also unable to see the sex of the baby. By the time they could see anything, she was so cramped in there, he guessed a girl ( and was right). But did say "don't run out and buy girl things though".

This time at 21 weeks, it was easy as pie to see baby is a girl! My daughter is thrilled and so am I- so tired of yellow, green and white!

    Maybe next time- good luck!

  • With ds we were able to find out at 12w2d.  Of course, with all future u/s (and there were several) it couldn't be confirmed.  Luckily, at birth we found out they were right :)

  • I'm going back next Friday for the same reason. They couldn't get all of the measurements bc baby would not move. Hopefully LO will spread his/her legs for us then too!

Ah, stubborn babies! I heard a trick that you should drink a little coke right before the ultrasound -- even a few sips. The combo of sugar and caffeine should wake them up. It worked for me.
  • We didn't have a problem finding out the sex at 20 weeks, but at every other u/s they were able to confirm it. There was never any mistaking our boy, and there were some u/s where the only pics we came away with were pics of boy parts (because it was the ONLY thing he was showing us).

I'd guess you will be able to see everything at your next appointment. If not, walk around a few minutes and try again. You might just have a stubborn baby.
