Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did anyone have a LO who was a "happy spitter" when they were younger?

DS didn't spit up, but had horrible silent reflux.  DD seems to have the typical newborn/infant reflux, but is a spitter-upper.  She spits up after most nursing sessions - sometimes just a little, sometimes a little more.  BUT she occasionally spits up A LOT - like vomiting, but it doesn't seem to hurt her, doesn't seem difficult to come out (meaning no heaving), and doesn't seem to affect her afterwards, except that she's typically hungry afterwards.

I've looked it up online and it seems that she'll outgrow it and I don't really need to be too worried...but I was just curious to see if others experienced this and how long did it last?

Thanks!! :)

  • Yup, DD was one of those "happy spitters" until she was about 9 months old.  It got significantly better when she learned to sit up around 6 months, but it didn't go away completely until she started crawling and pulling up to stand.  In the mean time though, you just have to do a lot of laundry.... :)  Good luck!

Oh great...  I hope it doesn't take that long.  :)  Thanks for letting me know, though!

Yeah, I think it was the same for us with ds.  Lots of burp cloths around the house and lots of clothes spit up on.

This exactly. DD spit up so much. It never bothered her, and she never had trouble gaining weight. In fact, DD was a huge chunker!  Those first few months it worried me, then I saw that it was really not a big deal. I wonder if our next babies will have the same issue? Bring on the laundry!

DS2 was a happy spitter until 6-8 months or so....I forget already!  But I know I had a really fast letdown, and he'd cough and sputter a lot when first starting to eat, and then I would swear he'd puke up half his meal....I used to wonder how he gained any weight he spit up so much!  But completely normal, he did grow out of it, but he didn't completely stop spitting up until he was closer to 1....and at that point it was only several times a week, not every time he ate.  Enjoy your munckin....I miss being spit up on!!!!!  :)

  • DS was a happy spitter as well, and gained just fine.  I only BFed for 2 months, then switched to Similac Sensitive.  Finally at 6 months, I was so fed up with the spitting that I decided to try Similac Soy...even though he wasn't hurting/upset/bothered by/losing weight because of the "happy" spitting, I wasn't so "happy" about it, lol!  Within a few days the spitting up all but stopped.  And, at a year, he switched to whole milk with no problem.

Good luck, and buy some stock in laundry detergent and stain sticks Wink

  • 8 months here. I was impressed at how much could come out of her! Buy extra burp cloths and shove a ton in your diaper bag!
  • Ds spit up after every single nursing session till he was about 9 or 10 months old.  DS's doctor was never worried because DS was happy, and growing well.  The hungry afterwards thing is pretty normal, I would feed her more and make sure to burp, that worked well for us in the beginning (after a while he wouldn't burp anymore).

  • I had a happy spitter until he was about 9 months old or so.  Like the PPs said, it never bothered him and he was growing so the ped wasn't worried...I just did A LOT of laundry!
