Is there a cheaper alternative to the Medela wipes?

Started back to work today and trying to figure out the whole pumping at work thing (I've pumped about once a day at home since about 3 weeks pp).  I'm a bit uncomfortable about taking the parts and stuff to the bathroom or kitchen to wash out especially because it would be 3 times a day (hoping I'll get over that...).  I bought a pack of the Medela wipes to sanitize the parts between pumping, but those are a small fortune (what, 8 or 9 bucks for 25 wipes?).  Are there cheaper wipes out there for this sort of thing?

Re: Is there a cheaper alternative to the Medela wipes?

  • Do you have a mini- (or full) fridge available to you? I, and a lot of other working moms, put my parts in the fridge in between work pumps that way I don't have to wash them at work. I use a new Ziploc bag for them every day, but it's a lot cheaper than those wipes!

I can't do the fridge thing as I am in my car all day. I am curious if there are cheaper options than the Medela wipes also.

I just bought the Target brand - 80 wipes for around $4
  • Here are a few ideas. I've used these all (after I got sick of washing my pump parts 3 times a day!

-buy double parts so you don't have to wash in between. Put the dirty parts in a ziplock bag and wash everything one time at home.

-After you pump put your pump parts in a bag and stick them in a frig. The next time you pump you can use them again.

And this is what I've been doing with DD:

-I figure that freshly expressed milk can sit out for up to 10 hours, so I also figured that my pump parts could sit out for up to 10 hours. Now I stick my pump parts in a ziplock bag, put them back in my big pump bag, and then just use them (I don't rinse them or anything). It's working just fine. Some people might think it's not a good idea to do this, but like I said, freshly pumped milk can sit out for up to 10 hours, so my pump parts can sit out for 7-8 hours (IMO).

I could put them in a frig, but it's not that convenient for me (I'm a teacher and would have to go to the staff lounge and keep them in there).

I have done all of these and come to the same conclusion as pp -- they are fine sitting out (well in my bag with my cooler of milk) until the next pump session.  I also have three sets so DH (who washes my pump parts) only has to wash all the parts every couple of days.

  • I am a teacher no real direct access to a fridge I just bought an extra cooler and I put the parts in there to stay cold then I dont have to clean them until I get home esp. when time is short during recess ;o)
  • I would cut the wipes in fourths. A quarter of a wipe was enough to wipe them down.

    Same here.

You could also just bring washcloths and a bottle of water and wipe them down with water. I rinse mine with water and no soap and sterilize at the end of the day.

Ditto - and I'm glad to hear others came to the same conclusion as I did about them sitting out :)

What!?!?!  I didn't know there were Target brand ones!  I've been shelling out $$$ for the Medela ones since October!  Wish I'd known about this sooner...

  • Great question.  I looked at the Target brand wipes and the only thing I saw in the store was for your breasts, not the pump parts. I looked at the "ingredients" and they were different so not sure they are interchangeable.

I saw them today and they are an expensive baby bottom wipe for "breastfed" babies saying they have more needs!
