there were news reports nearby of creeps looking for where children lived - so i highly suggest NOT mentioning "baby sleeping". sure it's paranoia, but doesnt' hurt to be cautious, right?
mine just says "please knock" - taped over the doorbell.
Our thoughtless neighbors would pound on our front door all of the time...and yell our names! Our dog barked like crazy every time. I tried to drop hints, but eventually had to put up a sign that said...Please do not knock.

for all they know, it's broken!
True, but I think the cozy coupe in the driveway, the stroller on the porch, the toys in the front yard and a sidewalk full of chalk drawings kinda gives our secret away...

um, those are all things that my cat plays with. i'm one of THOSE pet owners.
I have a piece of blue painters tape over it and nothing else. It has been there for months and I think only once has someone not knocked. Our UPS man used to ring multiple times when dropping off a package. That was the main thing I was trying to deter and it works.
We took our doorbell off at our old place, so it forced people to knock instead. That was before baby, our doorbell was just not working and we never fixed it.
The doorbell isn't loud at all here, so it's a non issue.

Re: How to post "Do not Ring the Doorbell" sign
PLEASE DO NOT RING BELL.
Baby is asleep. Please knock.
Thank you.
(I tape it over the doorbell)

Ours says: "Doorbell broken, please knock." Then in red at the bottom "No Solicitors" It is taped up in the window between the door and the bell.
(We just completely disconnected the door bell because too many people would ignore the sign, or read the sign after they pressed it.)

I put a piece of electrical tape that says "No Bell" over the doorbell.
