Breastfeeding

pump & dump?

i have been breastfeeding since LO was born 11 days ago, i recently started supplementing because of problems with jaundice, weight and feeling like all she wanted to do was eat! tonight i am having the family over for dinner and would REALLY like a few glasses of wine! i try to pump every 3-4 hours so do i pump & dump? or do i just not pump until tomorrow morning and the alcohol be out of my system?

if i do pump and dump how many times do i do this?

thanks in advance ladies! i am a first time mommy and the FIRST person in my family to BF - so i am CLUELESS!

My boobs would be screaming if I went all night without bfing or pumping so I would pump and dump if you are feeling any of the effects of the wine before you go to bed or when you would normally feed at night.  As for the rest of the night you could just "sleep it off :)".

  • so pumping and dumping once before bed should be enough? i will be okay to feed her in the morning by breast?

From what I have read it leaves your milk just like it leaves your body and doesn't linger but if you are worried you can buy test strips at Walgreens or probably anywhere like that, and test your milk in the morning.  I can hardly stand to pump and dump so I have used them in the past to check my milk in the mornings.

I would suggest milkscreen test strips. I had about 7 drinks sat night and used them in the morning to make sure i was good to feed. I did feed and pump before we left home. I didn't bring my pump to our friends, which was a bad choice. By the next morning I was dripping and was so upset. But when I got home i pumped and then tested the milk. By that time the alcohol has metabolism and I knew I was safe and so was the milk. Everybody is different in metabolizing  alcohol so it may take longer for you.

  • It kind of depends on how much you want to drink. If I just want a glass or two, I'll have it just after I've finished nursing. By the time LO wants to eat again, it's out of my system (3 hours later). If I have any reservations about whether the milk is safe, I'll give LO a bottle & just pump a little bit later (so that I can store the milk). Sometimes I do pump & dump, but I typically don't have so much to drink that it's not out of my system after a couple of hours .

This.   If I have a drink, I do it right after nursing.
