Man I wish Feta Cheese wasnt on the do not eat list...

There is an excellent pizza place near my house that makes the BEST greek salad an I have been craving it sooo bad lately but Feta cheese is on the list. Why does it have to be this that I am craving, anyone else craving something that you "shouldnt" have and have you had it???

Re: Man I wish Feta Cheese wasnt on the do not eat list...

  • I'm with you, I LOVE greek salad! Not quite the same, but you can make it at home and buy feta cheese in the grocery store that specifically says it's pastuerized.

  • As long as the feta cheese is pasteurized, there's no reason you can't eat it :-) You could even ask them to check if the stuff they use is... if not- you can just get your own feta from the grocery store and make it :-)

  • Chicken feta pizza sounds good right now, I doubt I can convince dh to order that for dinner though
  • I'm pretty sure that most cheese in the US is pastuerized and I'd imagine the feta on the pizza is as well. My doctor told me not to worry about it (it wasn't on her list, but I have seen it on other lists).
  • Unless it's a really fancy, expensive place, the cheese is probably pasteurized.  You could always call and ask.

  • Honestly, I ate Feta cheese during my first time around and had no issues as I didn't even know it was on the list. I also ate deli meat and drank a cup a coffee a day at work... my child is perfectly healthy and hasn't ever been sick and she is 14 months old now. The chances of getting sick from Feta are extremely rare. The most important thing is that you are taking your vitamins!

Now go have yourself a greek salad!

  • Pausterized from the store is safe to eat. I think Feta that has been cooked to bubbly (to kill off any bacteria) is ok too, but check with your doctor to make sure.

  • I just had that the other day. I am not going to stress over it. I seriously doubt it was unpasteurized.

  • I actually found pasteurized feta and called the dr to ask. They said when It comes to soft cheeses, they prefer that i stay away from them no matter what just to be safe
  • I ate it cooked on pizza with my first pregnancy and now since you have mentioned it I am craving it.
  • I eat pastuerized feta. I remember back in 1st Tri I got a pizza with feta on it and ate it without thinking about it and I called my OB's phone nurse to ask her about it and she said most restaurants use pasteurized cheese and that it was perfectly fine and to enjoy my pizza! I did call the restaurant to make sure and it was pasteurized.

This makes absolutely no sense to me at all!

I'm all for everyone making their own decisions on risks, but I have no idea why soft, pasteurized cheese would have any danger whatsoever. If the bacteria is killed it makes no difference what texture the cheese is.  Talk about an overprotective OB!

  • Eat the salad.  Unless you specifically imported the Feta, the cheese in the US is pasteurized.
  • I have yet to find any US restaurant that uses unpasturized cheese.  The only unpasturized cheese I have come across is from a specialty cheese store that my parents had bought for mother's day.

This worries me... it makes me feel like your Dr's office doesn't understand why they tell people to stay away from soft cheeses. There's really no risk if it's pasteurized.

    This.

And take everything you hear from a doctor regarding what to do/not to do with a grain of salt. Lots of things, like getting listeria from lunch meat for example are EXTREMELY rare and they're just telling you not to for liability purposes.

  • Glad I read this. I literally just ate something with feta cheese for lunch. It was from Au Bon Pain - pretty sure they would used pasturized cheeses...

This. Plus, most restaurants only use pasteurized cheese. Ask your server to check the labels.

    This exactly.

SAME THING.  If it is pasteurized it is FINE.  Eat it!  I have never found unpasteurized goat cheese in the grocery store.

    This is a joke, right?

Queso blanco/queso fresco (soft Mexican cheese) and melty cheese sauce queso are two totally different things. Heat up your queso jar and eat with no qualms.

I think that Drs. do this because they don't want to chance the fact that people are stupid.  If they say "no" to all soft cheese then they don't have to worry about the few stupid people who can't figure out the difference between unpasteurized and pasteurized cheese.
