12-24 month essentials/big purchases?

A couple of family members have asked for ideas on what they should get GK for his first birthday. They would rather buy essentials or useful items rather than toys.

Are there any "big" things other than a carseat or stroller that we may need during this year? Thanks!

We are getting J a swingset/slide for the backyard...I consider that more of a useful item and not a "toy" necessarily. We are getting a small one that he can use for a couple of years...

I guess this is also more of a toy, but DD loves her Kettler tricycle. I recommend it because she can use it now, with us pushing her and she can use it up until she's ready for a big girl bike.

I am really at a loss for big, non-toy items. I will keep thinking. I am sure there is something.

When Nate was around that age my aunt gave him a little table and chair set. It was a really nice set and is still in good shape. I can't tell you how much he used that thing! He colored, ate, played with his cars, etc. at that table. He was able to use it until he was around 5.

Does he have a convertible crib? If not, then a toddler bed might be an idea.

or booster seat? bed rail for big boy bed? big kid car seat? wagon?

I was at a loss for ideas until I saw some of these posts. I am DYING to get a swingset for J, but am appalled at how expensive they are (I want to get something she could grow with and is good quality). Also, the Kettrike is a great idea - I got one at a consignment sale but it is a bit beat up. J got a Radio Flyer wagon for Christmas and loves that too. Also, stuff for the "playroom" like and "art table" or such are great ideas.

I could spend thousands from the One Step Ahead catalog (which ironically, arrived in the mail today) - you could check out their site for some ideas = )

Thanks-great ideas! I was thinking of a chair, but a table+chairs makes more sense. I'll check out one step ahead!
