2 Qs about 1 wk old-

DS is just 1 wk old but has been getting really "rough" hiccups...

can I prevent this? or how do I at least help it??

And, sometimes when he's sleeping in my arms I notice his head/neck twitches a little back and forth..normal sleeping movement??

Re: 2 Qs about 1 wk old-

  • He is SO cute! Congratulations! DD has had hiccups since she was inside of me. I give her a few sips of formula or water. Ask your pedi about water before you give it. If you are breastfeeding I think a few sucks on the boob will help. Her hiccups go away almost instantly after a few sips.

If he won't take anything they will go away eventually on their own. Most of the time I think they bother me more then DD.?

  • DD gets the hiccups & always has gotten them very often. You can't really prevent it from what i understand and unless it interferes with nursing, it's not a problem.?

She also moves her head back & forth in real jerky movements when she's hungry (rooting) or uncomfortable and just needing to change positions. ?

  • First, congrats on your new little one!  unless the hiccups are bothering your DS I wouldn't worry about them.  A pacifer or eating usually gets rid of the hiccups for my DS.  I'm not sure about the neck twitches, it could be due to the immature nervous system that newborns have.  I always watched DS sleep because he would move his mouth and eyes, could be the same thing?  Ask your pedi when you go next.

  • DS has been getting hiccups since he was inside of me.  I've heard that they really don't bother babies when they have the hiccups.  I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent them, but like PP said, I was told to try breastfeeding and/or burping to help alleviate them.

I've noticed DS gets "twitchy" when he is in REM sleep which is normal.

  • You could try a little gripe water, it helps instantly. Also BFing DD works right away. But like a pp said, they really don't get bothered by hiccups, we just feel so bad for them! :)

And newborns do crazy things in their sleep. DD makes all kinds of noise and movements out of nowhere sometimes.
