Alabama Babies

Bumbo, boppy, etc.

What did you ladies find to be "must haves" when you had your baby? I'm debating on these two items specifically, however any other must haves or wastes of money that wasn't worth it? We got some giftcards at the shower and I want to make sure we get the most beneficial things and not waste them with unneeded items. Thanks

Re: Bumbo, boppy, etc.

  • We have used our boppy A LOT. Back when I was nursing, it was great and now its great to use for tummy time.  We like the bumbo, but I really don't think its a must-have.

  • I have used the boppy from day one. It was good when LO was little I could prop her in it. I use the Bumbo now instead of breaking out the highchair to conserve on space. I liked both and got both second hand.

Honestly, I had both and didn't use either very much. The boppy I had was small and was kind of awkward to use. K liked the bumbo seat, but we only used it really for about 1 or 2 months until she could sit well unassisted.

If you are looking for baby items to fulfill, I would make sure you have a good swing, a good high chair, a bouncer and a baby bjorn (or some other kind of sling.) Also, we used a floor gym a good bit when K was really young.

  • Caleb hated the Bumbo, so we definitely could have done without that.  I bought it at a great price from a consignment sale though, so it was no big deal.  Some babies really like sitting in them though...so, who knows!

I definitely used my Bobby alot with both babies.  It just makes nursing more comfortable.  Although, you could do the same with pillows.  I really like it though.

Other must haves for us are:  swing, bouncy seat, video monitor & the Homedics sound machine.

  • I use my boppy a lot.  I didn't nurse but I used it when she was younger for propping her in when she was hanging out on the floor, and I used it under my arm when I was rocking her because quite frankly her little head got heavy lol.  Now she uses it as a pillow type thing when she is playing on the floor and wants to lay back and play with her feet :)

We don't have the Bumbo but I do have the Summer Infant 3in1 entertainer which is a lot like the bumbo except it has a tray with toys that goes around it.  She likes it alright, but we could have lived without it...however it does become a booster seat so maybe I'll get use out of it when that time comes.

Honestly, those are two things that we could have done without. Although, I have friends who swear by both.

I RARELY ever used the boppy and we purchased the 3-1 summer seat as well. She liked it and it was nice to have to put her somewhere as well as to feed her snacks in (she actually still uses it sometimes and loves just to sit in it now), but neither were a MUST have for us.

  • No Bumbo here but we are lovin the Boppy...we use it every day.
  • We used the boppy pillow for EVERYTHING!  First for nursing and then as a pillow for me to lean up against on when I slept with her on me.  Then when she was old enough, I put it around her to make sure she didn't fall over and hit her head on the floor, when she was learning to sitl/.  Now, she goes and finds it in her room, drags it out and uses it as her "pillow" when she plays "night-night" with me.

We never had a bumbo seat....but we got TONS of mileage out of the swing, bouncy seat, boppy, when she was itty-bitty.

  • Boppy - used all the time

Bumbo - only a few times.  Could have done without it.

  • I see a trend here...

I don't think J sat in the Bumbo more than 10 times - she really didn't like it.  I didn't get the boppy, but had the "My Brest Friend" pillow that I love.  However, the boppy definitely is multi-functional = )
