Those who breastfeed, ? on your diet

Do you eat strawberries and peanuts? I know this has to do with allergies for LO in the future, but is this true. I just got scolded by some lady I don't even know that well about eating a strawberry. I was never told anything about this by my LC nor LO's pedi. I googled it but came up with tons of information about it. Nothing concrete. Anyone asked their pediatrician or LC on this? I'm thinking it's fine unless I eat shear volumes of either. Do you think it's ok to eat these things in moderation? Thanks.

  • I do. From what I've read and been told unless you cut those things out while you were pregnant it makes no sense to do so now.

  • My ped indicated nuts and strawberries may lead to gassy babies.  I've heard nothing from a medical professional about these items in breast milk causing allergies later in life.
  • I eat both strawberries and peanuts. I had no idea those were even issues.
  • I eat them both as well.  And if the womans concern is allergies maybe you can educate her that more recent research shows that exposing a child to foods that might be allergic to earlier reduces the risk.  (baby 411)

  • I'm a vegetarian ... unfortunately much of what I "need" is on the typical "don't eat list" ... however, fortunately, I eat whatever I want Big Smile ... my cousin has a Ph.D. in nutrition and now works for WholeFoods. Prior to that she was a Public Health nutritionist and the Breastfeeding Director for the District of Columbia ... she's given me lots of great info ... one of which is that I should eat the healthy food that I want ... including strawberries and nuts.
  • I've read that it may lead to allergies, but I stopped eating nuts after DS had blood in his stool twice.

  • From what I have read about allergies, it's if you DON'T expose your child to these things in small amounts it could lead to allergies.  I know there is research both ways, but this way makes more sense to me.  And when I say small amounts, I don't mean you can't have much, just that a small amount is in the breast milk.  As opposed to actually feeding your child something with those things in them right now.

I do eat berries and nuts.  My kids have not shown allergies.

  • Good Lord, people need to mind their own business.  If your baby is not reacting poorly to your diet, you should eat what you want.  I had to cut dairy and soy b/c LO can't digest the protein.  If you notice your baby is gassy or other issues, it is time to tweak your diet.  Otherwise, carry on as you wish.

  • Never heard this.  I eat both often; no one has ever told me not to.  ::shrug::

I eat them. My mom practically lived on peanut butter when she was pregnant and BF me and I have zero allergy issues.

My LC told me this as well.

  • I eat both, and lots of nuts.
