Infant blood draw

I have to get a CBC for Matt...we have to go through Quest Diagnostics.

I am so so fearful of this....I hate having it drawn as a adult, I cannot imagine the pain it will put my baby too.

Any tips for a good experience (good tech for the stick)? We are probably going to have it done in the Clear Lake area - one of the PLand locations (we visited Friday) doesn't stock the baby butterflies unless there is a specific need so he's not going there.

Re: Infant blood draw

  • He might surprise you.  DS had a blood draw at his 9 month appt through Quest.  I was talking to people in the waiting room before hand and I was certain he would scream during it.  He barely made a peep.  When we walked back through the waiting room everyone was amazed at how well he did!  The worst part was that they put a bandaid on it when they were done and all he wanted to do was stick his finger with that in his mouth.  He managed to get it off while we were driving so I had to pull over and fish it out of his mouth.  Since it was still bleeding a little he got blood everywhere!

It's not as bad as you would think. They all have to get it done at 12 months too.  Both times that Emmy got blood drawn, it went smoothly with one prick and they got it.  It only hurts when they move, and so just hold him tightly on your lap so it doesn't wiggle too much.  For Emmy, she always feels better when she has her hello kitty or dora bandaid...and so we handed it to the tech so she can use intead of the regular bandaids.  Also...we have some kind of fun treat right afterwards...so they have something to look forward to.

  • I'm pretty sure it's just a heel prick or a toe prick at this age, so it's really not that big of deal.

Marion always cries, but it's more from me having to hold her tightly than anything else.

  • Thank you for the advice ladies.....I will certainly hope he takes it well. Anyone know how many tubes they take?

  • I'm not going to sugar coat it.  DS had to have blood drawn for a cbc and different cultures last summer and it was AWFUL!  I seriously wanted to punch the technician drawing his blood.   I hate having blood drawn and it's definitely no trip to the park having it done on a child, at least not mine!

Good luck!  I hope everything goes well!
