Hawaii Babies

baby bargins book?

So I am planning on registering for this baby of mine this weekend & I wanted to pick up a book to take with and make sure I am registering for the best products.  It seems the latest edition of the Baby Bargins book is the 2009 - 8th edition (last updated Jan 2010).  https://www.windsorpeak.com/babybargains/

Do you think that is current enough?  or do your recommend another book that was published more recently?

Re: baby bargins book?

  • LOL!  This is along the same vein as the question I asked right before you!  Too funny.

I was also wondering about BB.  I read they are not planning to issue another edition until 2011 so I was thinking of just getting it.  But, I was also wondering if there are some other (better) resources out there.  Let's see what the ladies say....

(BTW, are we called "Bumpies" now?)

  • ha ha!  I know...I saw your post right after I posted mine!  Great minds think a like (or at least ask the same questions!!) Stick out tongue

I didn't hear that about 2011, but if so, it seems like that 8th edition is as good as it is going to get for awhile.

And yes...I think we are officially "bumpies"!!

  • If it was just updated a few months ago, it sounds good to me.  I didn't buy the book -- just went to Barnes and Noble and read through it in the cafe.  I trusted that they were selling the latest.  And you can always f/u with reviews online.

  • Sorry, I don't have any recs. I spent half of the day yesterday reading the Baby Bargains book! I still find it helpful eventhough it is not very current. If I like a particular product I just cross check against more recent product reviews online.

I did this. Spent probably way too much time taking notes sitting in B&N. And I didn't even do all the sections! It was somewhat helpful, although I did find that some of the information regarding specific brands was outdated or not inclusive enough (such as, a specific diaper pail I was curious about wasn't mentioned).

  • they have a message board on babybargains.com and there are some really helpful reviews there, although not from the authors.  I've been doing some research on there too.
  • I bought the book after I found out we were expecting and found it overwhelming at first but then went through it bit by bit.  It's helped a lot actually because there is just so much stuff!  I also googled for a 'sample registry' and read through those a little.  I then checked out Amazon.com for some reviews and registered that way on BRU... Amazon has best sellers, etc. and I read a lot of reviews.  We now know which stroller and car seat to buy.  My brother and SIL have the same brand, so I know I like them a lot but based on the reviews in the BB book I know they are reliable and safe as well.

This is where I looked for reviews - a lot of the members who post do often comment on what the authors most recommend, so you can still get that info a lot of the time. I was too cheap to buy the book, especially since you can't get a lot of the brands here. Stick out tongue
