I was in a wedding over the weekend and her younger cousin was there. The last time I saw this girl was at my friend's child's first birthday party, and she was pregnant. At the time she was accepting gas money, living with her mom, didn't have a job, going to raves, etc. Well now she is chasing around a toddler.
He was having a great time running around on the dance floor with all the other kids, and she just kept saying, "Aiden, come here. Aiden, come here", but she never got off of her butt to actually go get him. Anyhow, a little later she is chasing him down a hall saying, "get back here demon child!" over and over. I felt really really sad for that sweet little boy. It was obvious that this was a pet name that she had for him, and it is just so awful... not to mention the skirt she was wearing barely covered her bum. Ugh. I sometimes wish we had to get a license to be a parent.
Re: Heard a woman call her 1 yr old "Demon Child" - WTF?

I second the parenting license! Those of us who are good parents would have no problem getting it! People who adopt basically have to get one and sadly sometimes even that doesn't help
On a happier/funnier note: My DDs nickname/petname is "Queen" short for "Queen of the Babies" my mom said it one day being funny and it stuck!
did she say it jokingly or in all seriousness?
What does accepting gas money have to do with it?
It sounds to me like you're judging her in this manner b/c you didn't like her to begin with.
Reminds me of my neighbor who has a vanity license plate that says "Bratcab"
She was serious. As if she were calling him by his name, she was calling him demon child.
After the child's birthday party I was talking to my friend and her mother and they told me about how scared they were for this girl to become a parent because she was in no way prepared to or making preparations to become a parent. She had to ask for gas money from her uncle to get home from the party, and this was not an uncommon theme with her.
Of course my judgment may be skewed because I know the girl, but if I heard a stranger at the grocery store chasing after their kid calling them, "demon child" the way that she was I'm pretty sure I would draw a negative opinion of them too.
She sounds like a real winner. Although some people have an odd way of picking terms of endearment. Example: DH and I refer to the baby as the "little monster" and I'm suremif someone heard me call a child little monster they might be offended, but we think its a great nickname. Albeit very different than demon child and with the right tone it makes a difference.
Hmmm. Not the worst I have heard, but it is still sad.
Who knows, my son can be a mess sometimes. When we are in public and he makes a bad choice (ie running away or throwing a fit) and we get knowing smiles from adults and grandparents etc... I always say something along the lines of "He is for sale, if anyone is interested!" as we are leaving. I wonder if they talk about me later...
I'm not trying to defend her or anything, but I always refer to our unborn LO as Demon Child or Spawn of Satan- of course, I'm totally joking when I say it!
yeah, I'm sure how she was saying it has a big part to do with how you're taking it - she wasn't saying it in a joking manner, I'm guessing?
We were at one of those crazy bouncy house playland places this weekend while visiting friends, and DH was telling me he saw a (presumably dad) lift a 4-yr-oldish kid up and scream in his face, to the point that the kid was shaking and crying when the man put him down - sh!te like that makes my stomach hurt, bc I can *only* imagine how that poor kid gets treated at home...ugh ugh ugh. Public displays of crappy parenting - always depressing!
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
I often touch my stomach while out with DS while he's throwing a tantrum and tell everyone around me "ohhh I'm sooo never having children"
You sometimes say things to break the tension because you don't know what else to do when you can't control your kids.
