Blacking out nursery windows?

Are you doing anything to black out light during the day? Our nursery faces a fairly busy street and has a bay window flanked by smaller windows. I'm at a loss for a decent baby friendly way to black them out. We've looked into Roman shades and other kinds of shades but they cost so much to have installed (we're still exploring DIY shades). I have sheers and silk panels in the rest of the house but somehow silk panles, crayons and dirty fingers don't mix. So, what if anything are you guys doing to black out the nursery duing the day? Is this even a priority for you?

Re: Blacking out nursery windows?

  • We bought black out drapes from Target. In lime green :) Lets in the light during the day when they are pulled back, but darkness when you close them even when it is bright outside. Love them.

  • I don't have this problem but would just like to say it's not a good idea to black out the room during the day because you want the baby's sleep cycle to adjust to where s/he is doing a majority of sleeping during the night when it's dark.  If you make it dark during the day too, it's just going to be confusing and you are going to be miserable.
  • We put blankets over the windows, currently.  We had a hard time finding blackout shades during my pregancy and never got around to it once the baby was here.  I hope you find something that works for you-- the Target shades sound lovely-- I might look into those myself!

In hindsight, blacking out the baby's room should have been a much bigger priority.  Probably in the top 5 things that make life w/ a baby (at our house)easier.

  • I have lived and learned, and now, yes, darkening the room was a must for us. DS has the Target drapes AND blackout roller shades. I got the PBK blackout sailcloth drapes for new baby. For some kids, it may not matter. But it matters a lot here!

  • I bought "room darkening" cordless cellular shades from Lowes. They will cut the width for you for free. For a window up to 30" was $50 i think per window at my lowes. Only thing is that can't adjust the length but it doesn't look bad since they all bunched up anyways. Much cheaper then getting custom length. Comes in tan and white. They really make the room dark!
  • It's not a priority for me, and I live in the Land of The Midnight Sun.  I don't want my baby getting used to a completely dark room- BUT I'd like it to be dark some of the time.  We only get about 4 hours of darkness in the summer.  I got custom fit roman shades (by Thomas Kinkade I think) that have an optional blackout liner for about $250 (my window is 5 wide and 3 feet tall).  They had free shipping too.

  • I've thought about the sleep cycle issue as well. I guess the bigger issue is blocking out street view of LO's room, BFing etc. I really like the top down bottom up shades but holy mother of god are they expensive! For those of you with black out panels, aren't you concerned about LO pulling down the curtain and rod onto themselves as toddlers?

  • We just put in darkening shades (cordless/stringless) in 3 bedrooms. They are accordian style and not great quality but they look fine from a distance. I think we did 6 windows for under 60$ (2 big, 4 small). You can cut them to the size of your window. Dh got them at lowes or HD. We didn't buy shades at first with ds and had to buy them at about 4 months old when the light did affect his naps. It never affected his day vs night but when consistent naps were key in my life I was willing to do anything to get those hours in :)

In my experience when they are really tiny, they can and will sleep anywhere and with light, because they needs lots and lots of sleep.  After a while, I would expect it to be more important to keep the light out during the day.  We only had one small window in DD's room and we bought a light-blocking shade.  Just a cheap one from Walmart.  If you want to invest, i guess you would have to think more about what kinds to get so LO won't pull it down once they are mobile.
  • We found white black out curtains at Christmas Tree Shops. We then made a curtain and stitched the two together. It works extremely well.
