Breastfeeding

Low supply?

How can you tell if you have low supply? The only time I really feel full is at night. DD usually only eats off one side (she does both sides at maybe 2-3 of her feedings) so after our first morning feeding I pump the other side and get about 2oz plus about 1/2oz from the side she ate from. My breasts are tender to the touch but they're soft...is that normal? Or a sign of low supply? It seems like she empties me in 5-7 minutes and then is content. She goes anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours between feedings (occasionally she goes a 4 hour stretch at night), but I expect that since she's only 12 days old.

If it is low supply should I be pumping more to get it back up? I nurse on demand and try to feed her whenever she is fussy just to eliminate that as a possibility for the fussiness.

Re: Low supply?

  • soft breasts do not indicate a low supply.  Is she gaining weight and having at least 6 wet diaper a day?  If so, you are fine!

  • She's definitely meeting her diaper requirements. It seems to me like she's gaining, I'll find out for sure on Friday. Thanks!

You're welcome.  You may want to call first, but usually the LCs at your hospital will do weight checks whenever you want if you are ever concerned.

  • Your supply is still regulating, so hang in there.  What you can pump at 2w pp probably isn't an indication of what you'll be able to pump in another month or so.  If she seems satisfied and is having plenty of wet diapers, you're probably okay.  You could definitely take her to your pedi or a LC for a weight check if it would make you feel better.
