anyone have an u/s around 5 1/2 weeks or before?

I've had my betas drawn four times (first three times routine because of previous m/c) and last one because I started spotting Thursday (My betas have all been good)..I've been spotting on/off since Thurs and when I call the doc again tomorrow..I'm wondering if I should request an u/s?  I know I won't be able to see a h/b yet, but they can at least see the sac right?

If he tells me the only thing I can do is get another beta..I am going to cry or scream..It is reassuring to see the numbers going up (I pray they are) but it still doesn't explain the spotting and I would like to know if an u/s can show anything!!

  • I wouldnt get an u/s tomorrow, but thats just me. With my last pregnancy, I had some spotting ( which I was told was implantation) and had an u/s with my RE. We saw a fetal pole and yolk sac, but obviously no heartbeat yet. I waited 12 more days (which were hell) and went back. Thats when they confirmed m/c ( I never had anymore bleeding). This time around, I requested my first u/s at 7 weeks to know for sure. I think the added anxiety is not worth it by getting one early. I know it is so hard, but my doc says there is nothing they can really do, and more betas will not tell them anything unless they were not strong to begin with, do not double, or start to drop. I hope you can come up with a decision you will feel comfortable with. ((hugs))

  • I had an transvaginal u/s at about 5 1/2 wks. All I could see was a little bubble, no heartbeat yet. My doctor said it was really common not to see a heartbeat at that stage. If you think seeing that would make you feel better, I would try to get the u/s. However, you might want to just wait a couple more weeks when you will actually have a chance to see the heartbeat.

  • I have had four ultrasounds already and I'm 7W 1D.  At first my doctor suspected an ectopic pregnancy because I had a lot of bleeding.  At 4W 6D we just saw a little black blob in my uterus (nothing in the sac).  At 5W 4D and 5W 6D we saw a sac with a yolk sac in it (no fetal pole visible yet).  I just went back today at 7W 1D and there was a baby with a heartbeat.  I have a subchorionic hematoma which is causing my spotting.  It was diagnosed at my second ultrasound (5W 4D).  I am on pelvic rest now and that has has helped slow the bleeding.  I would tell your doc you'd like an ultrasound for peace of mind since you have been spotting so much.  Good luck!

  • I had an u/s today because I had been bleeding. The doc was able to see the sac and yolc sac. He said I was measuring 5w 4d.
  • It's also true that they can't really do anything - if you are going to m/c, then they won't be able to stop it. For me, they just wanted to confirm that it wasn't ectopic.
  • I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 5W 3D and saw a tiny, faint heartbeat.  It wasn't anything to write home about, but it was reassuring.  I was measuring right on, too, so they could measure also and tell you where you are.  My technician did say that it was very unusual to see a good heartbeat, so I may have just been lucky.
  • I am going to my RE for my first ultrasound at 5W 3D on Saturday. I wouldn't be going so early normally, but my RE is moving to Texas and he offered to do the u/s this weekend. I am thrilled to have him do it and I hope to see a yolk sac. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  • I had an ultrasound yesterday because I started spotting then bleeding on Sunday. It was incredibly reassuring to see the gestational sac and know that I hadn't lost the baby yet - if I was going to at all. They still don't know why I'm bleeding but I'm waiting for bloodwork (2nd draw tomorrow) to figure out next steps. Good Luck to you!
