Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is this normal?

In a matter of two weeks my 6 month old is getting increasingly mobile.  She is not crawling yet but close.  Here is my question, she goes to a top daycare and we have had two incident reports now of her bumping her head. Is this normal and I should calm down and not freak out yet???  She gets around on the floor but at home we have carpet everywhere.  They have area carpets at daycare but if she squirms off it she will bump her head on the hard floor.  Not sure if I should demand keeping her on the carpet, not sure what to do.......Sad

Re: Is this normal?

  • Bumps are a totally normal part of figuring out mobility.  Yes, it sucks, but there's not much you can do.  Maybe ask her teacher to try to keep her in the middle of the carpeted area so that she's less likely to get to the hard floor, but really what else do you expect them to do?

  • Yes, I think it is normal. I nurse my son at lunch and see a lot that goes on during that hour. I have seen a lot of bumped heads. The caregivers cannot be with your little one all the time (and I'm not suggesting you think this). But it is important to know that these kids can move quick and the caregivers will try their best to keep your LO safe (especially when LOs are starting to be more mobile).

Also, the caregivers hate filling out incident reports as much as you hate getting one.

With that said, I think you should ask them to try to keep her on the carpets. It wouldn't hurt to say something. (Ok, they may something behind your back, but if it prevents your LO from getting a goose egg, then great!)

  • Just wait until she starts trying to walk. Cuts, bumps and bruises are part of childhood. You can't protect them all the time!

I wouldn't worry about it unless you feel the injuries are stemming from negligence (like she fell out of the bumbo because she was left unattended).

  • Bumps are part of being a kid and figuring things out.  And think about it, she is just starting to learn to crawl.  Going from an area rug to a wood floor lends itself to being unbalanced because she doesn't know how to do that yet.  I wouldn't freak out yet but maybe politely ask vs. demand that if they notice she is getting close to the wood floor they move her back to the middle of the rug.

  • Bumps and bruises are a part of the learning process. We had a month span where Archer was getting one almost daily, now he is much more careful and gets maybe one a week, if that. Landry is where we were with Archer now and getting his almost daily. We watch them and protect them as much as possible but you can't prevent them all. As long as they aren't severe, I don't stress out over them.
  • Crawling bumps are nothing compared to standing/walking bumps. All of them are normal as LO's become mobile. I wouldn't restrict her to one area. Once she does crawl it will be dang near impossible for her to stay in one place. Plus she'd be miserable.

  • two of my aunts work in daycares.  they legally have to inform you of every bump and bruise.  even though they know its nothing serious.  its enough to make a parent go nuts.  they make sure to attach a note to the incident reports to let parents know whether it was typical childhood accidents and such.  Like: "Joey" was crawling lost his balance toppled over and bumped his head off the floor, he seems fine and didnt even cry.  The notes are just in case something develops from a bump (like a concusion)  but most of the time its nothing.
