Got judged for highlighting my hair

Everything I've read says it's fine to highlight my hair - the color doesn't touch the scalp, and as long as you're in a well ventilated salon all should be fine. I even got the all-clear from my doc. So why does my know-it-all sister in law feel the need to preach to me about it?

Re: Got judged for highlighting my hair

  • I got told that I had better check with my doctor before taking TUMS. People always feel the need to "educate" the pregnant lady.

  • People are SO ready to give their opinions! Don't worry about it. My doctor said it was ok to color my hair.

I got my toes done on Saturday. I had a diet soda w/ me that I was sharing w/ a friend. The girl doing my friends toes asked "It's ok for you to have a soda?". How about you don't worry about it. MMMKay... thanks!

  • UGH!  Why do people think it is ok to not have a filter with pregnant women?!

  • Because for some reason, people think they have the right to judge a pregnant woman for every decision she makes.  My sister (who is younger and has no kids) always asks things like, should you be drinking that soda/having that caffeine.  It's annoying.

  • I got an all over color ::gasp!::
  • My mother let me have it the other day. I specifically asked my Doc if it was okay to DYE my entire head of hair and he said yes. My mom finds ONE link somewhere with a Dr. disagrees and she is all up in arms.
  • Last week a co-worker asked me if I should be eating pretzels. Good grief! Sorry your SIL feels the need to educate you. Grr!

  • Probably makes her feel better. My SIL is the same way. She has never had a child but she thinks she knows it all because some of her friends have given birth.

    So did I!!  Yes

  • I got so many looks when I was looking through the wine section at World Market for my mother for mothers day. I ended up buying 2 different kinds and the clerk gave me a "go to hell" look. I just smiled and said thank you.

  • It sounds like she has nothing better to do! Most people get it mixed up, you shouldn't dye your hair because you normally do rub it into your scalp, and with the hormones it may change the color. But highlighting is totally safe. People have looked at me with wide eyes before too saying, "well my sister is a hair dresser and she won't highlight or dye a pregnant person's hair!"

Tell her she can say all she wants but until she's finished medical school and is qualified to "preach" on the subject, then she should really keep her opinions to herself. Or maybe you should invest in buying her an updated version on what to expect when you're expecting because it sounds like hers must be 20 years old.

Did the color turn out ok? I have the color to do my own hair, but I am afraid of the hormonal changes and the color not turning out how I want it.

  • I've highlighted my hair 3 times this pregnancy and will once more next month. Nothing wrong with it. I've also eaten lots of deli meat too. again, no problems.   I hate it when people tell you what's good or what's bad when pregnant.  The worst are those who tell you whats right or worng and have never been pregnant.

  • Well someone call the Child Protective Team on me cause I have an appointment today to get an all over color! I can't wait! Gonna be a "Pamper Me" afternoon!!! :)

I just look at people when they tell me stupid stuff like that and say "Well you can do that when YOU get pregnant."

  • I'm not allowed to do a "full color" but I can do highlights since it doesn't sit on the scalp.  I can't wait!  I haven't colored my hair since I found out I was pregnant & it needs it BAD.  So I'm doing highlights right before 1 cousin's wedding & then again right before the other cousin's wedding.

  • Even my colorist said (when I went in for my all over color and highlights that the DR said was perfectly fine) that she has pregnant women in there at the start of contractions even b/c they won't know when they will be able to come back. :)

  • I'm not judging any of you but over time I regret not listening to more of this advice.  Just a different thought!
  • I have horrible gray roots, and I couldn't deal with 3 inches of them anymore, so I asked the doctor.  He told me it wasn't a problem, but not to be upset if it doesn't take.  I usually just dye them myself, but decided to see if I could get a better result from a salon.  My mom got me an apt at the place she goes and the colorist went a shade darker to make sure it would stick.  My hair is a bit on the black side, and not so dark brown, but no roots.  The colorist was pregnant too, so no problems there.

My sister is a hair stylist - and she used professional color on mine.....I think the matrix line?  It turned out great!  ( I have dark brown - almost black- hair.)
