The battle of the vacuum!

As I recently posted, our Dyson took a spill (down an entire flight of stairs) and was damaged beyond repair.  We had it for 5 years and I miss it a lot:(

Anyway, the search for a new one has been a real pain. Not that I can't find one I like, it's getting DH (the man who NEVER vacuums) to get the concept of going with tried-and-true vs. something different with differences I don't care for.

I found a newer version of our Dyson online through an major electronic store's outlet site (new, but $90+ off of regular price).  With some gift cards we have, we can get it for less than $300.  DH really wants us to try the Shark Navigator.  Here are my thoughts:

Dyson: I love it.  I used the on-board attachments as much as just vacuuming the floor.  The hose is stored over/"on" the telescoping wand/handle saving me another thing to unwrap to use.  The container is big so I'm not changing it a whole lot, despite the fact that I have 2 small (and messy) children and a LOT of carpet in our house.

Shark: It's lightweight and I have read it tends to tip when using the attachments.  The hose also loops over the back (like many other vacuums).  Small complaints, I know, but I didn't have them with my Dyson.

My biggest complaint?  That DH is so adamant about picking a battle over an appliance he NEVER uses!  Our Dyson didn't die.  It kicked-a** to the end.  While the Shark would be cheaper (by $100) and I might like it, I know I love the Dyson.  I explained the above to DH and that should be enough.  I told DH that if we got what he wanted (the Shark), I'd expect to see him using it.  A LOT.Wink

:::sigh::: He said I can go with what I want, but why make a battle over it when he really won't care?   Yes, he said that.  After an hour of discussing vacuums, he matter-of-factly said that in a day he wouldn't really care what vacuum we had anyway. :::headtodesk:::

I can't wait until our dishwasher kicks the bucket.  It's another appliance he rarely touches.  Finding that replacement should be fun. Confused

Re: The battle of the vacuum!

  • Invest in a Kirby!!!!!!!!!!! I can't say enough about it. Kirby beats Dyson in every single test (except for weight...Kirby weighs more because it's stainless steel). If you buy a Kirby you'll never buy another vacuum ever again. I used to literally go through 3 cheap vacuums a year. Since I've gotten my Kirby I've had NO problems. Kirby's can only be purchased through their sales people, but check craigslist. I got an almost-new Kirby for only $500! (they are about $1500 new). Just make sure that it's the newest model (Sentria). The lady I got mine from was selling it because, sadly, her dh was just diagnosed with cancer and had only a few months to live and so to prepare, they sold their big ranch house and bought a smaller two-story in a 50+ community and it was too heavy for her to carry up the stairs (she was an older lady with bad knees etc). Anyway, sometimes you can find a good deal. When the Kirby guy was at my house he had me vacuum one spot on the floor as much as I wanted to (I did it about 40 times). He then took the Kirby over it and got crud out of my carpet! The Kirby vibrates and shakes up all the dirt that goes down to the floorboards and sucks up the dirt, dander etc. Awesome!! My Kirby also comes with a shampooer and a ton of attachments... even a massager! (not that I've ever used it... not sure if I want my vacuum massaging me! Yikes!). The only thing that I kinda find a little annoying is that you have to attach the hose each time, but it only takes like 5 seconds and by doing so, your Kirby is as powerful as a shop vac...so it makes up for it with it's amazing power.

I remember awhile back I posted when I got my new Kirby and there were several people who also raved about their Kirby. Just thought I'd mention it since some people have never heard of a Kirby since they aren't sold in retail stores.
