Hi ladies. I'm pretty sure DS and I both have thrush. I was on antibiotics last week due to strep. Now, lo and behold I have red, burning, painful nipples. It hurts while nursing DS and my boobs just feel generally sore an uncomfortable. DS was a white covered mouth. Have any of you guys and your DCs had thrush and what did you do? Did you go the natural route or did you go the prescribed medicine route?
Re: Thrush :(
First, so sorry. Thrush sucks. If it's sunny where you are, try sitting by a window, topless, for 10 minutes in the AM (before 10) and again in the afternoon (after 3PM). The UV rays kill the bacteria in your nips and will help to relieve the itching. I was skeptical at first, but this really helped!
We used cream on my nips and a gel for Ellie's mouth (sorry I don't know the names because we live out of the country, but it was like monistat for my nips and probably nystatin for Ellie's mouth.) I also took acidophillus capsules 2x a day (Ellie has milk protein sensitivity, so eating yogurt was not an option.) My OB wouldn't prescribe an antibiotic.
Also, wash your bed sheets if you are leaking at night and you can also leave your pillows/comforter in the sun to help kill the bacteria there, too. Be vigilant about sterilizing everything and don't scratch! It just makes it worse! Do you have small fissures in your nips? If so, you will keep passing it back and forth until those heal, so keep airing out your boobs as much as possible. I don't think I wore a bra for a few days, except cotton when necessary! Also, after nursing, it helps to squeeze out some milk and rub on your nips, then let them air dry.
Again, I totally feel for you. Hang in there and good luck!
We've got it, or at least DS does. So far I only have very mild itching, and that might be my imagination. LOL The Dr. actually discovered it in DS's mouth at our 4mo well baby appt. Neither of us have been on antibiotics, so I guess we're just special.
DS is on nystatin and I'm using an over the counter antifungal cream for his bum and my nips. I'm also taking acidophillus and extra vitamin C. So much fun.
Good luck.
