This is the cake I made my 3 yr old for his bday. He wanted a farm animal cake. It was my first time using fondant and I loved it! Not including baking time, I spent about 6 hours on the cake! It was fun though.
It was easier than I thought. To make the fondant all it was was a bag of mini marshmellows microwaved with 2 T. of water. Then mix in 3/4 of a bag of powdered sugar! That's it! Then you knead it til it's like dough (keep the tabled covered with powdered sugar so it doesn't stick). Then add Wilton coloring to make your colors. If you're adding color, you can spray cooking spray on the table to keep it from sticking (so it doesn't stay white from the powdered sugar). Then roll it with a fondant rolling pin (that has spacers so that your thickness stays consistent). Keep flipping the fondant with each roll so it doesn't stick. Then lay the fondant over the rolling pin and roll it onto a cake with buttercream frosting. Push the fondant on gently with your hands. Trim off excess. Ta-da! Then you can start adding embellishments etc. To stack it you'll need each layer on a piece of covered cardboard and then put 3 small wooden dowel rods into each layer to support the layer above. That's pretty much all that the lady at the counter at Michael's told me and I was able to go home and do it! I wont take 100% credit for the design... I looked online and got a few ideas from other farm cakes and then merged all the ideas into one cake.
I also watched a few you-tube videos before I started.
LOVE it! I actually found the same cake and bookmarked it for Jackson's birthday this fall-totally doing the same farm theme. I was debating between doing farm animal cupcakes I found online, or that cake, you might have swayed me now!

Thats amazing! Where do you find the time! I admire your creativity!
One bit of advice... if you decide to attempt a large project like this, make sure you have the kids out of the house! There is no way I could have done it with the boys hanging off me and saying "look, look, mama, mama..." all day.
