Parenting after a Loss

xp from breastfeeding board...

I've started the slow process of weaning.  I have a decent freezer stash.  What is the best way to introduce formula?  I don't want to use all my BM and then start him on the formula in case he doesn't like it and it takes him a while to get used to it.  He generally takes 5oz bottles, do I do half and half?

  • I started with a bit more BM, so I would do 2 oz formula to 3 oz bm, then up the form and lower the bm . It only took a couple of days for us. And then sometimes she'd get full formula bottles, sometimes pumped bottles and sometimes I'd nurse. She never had a problem.

  • We started with about 75% BM and 25% formula and slowly increased the formula amounts.  You may have to try a couple brands of formula to find one he likes.

Don't try to quit BF or pumping cold turkey either - that's a sure fire way to end up with a clogged duct or mastitis.  You'll have to slowly reduce the number of pumpings/feedings over time.

  • We had to wean pretty abruptly and luckily dd had no issues. She liked the formula and we never had to mix. I breastfed her until the milk was completely gone, but honestly after a couple days of bottles she had no interest in bf-ing because the bottle had so much food.

Heck no!  I've been doing 4-5 pumps a day....I'm down to 3.  I figure I'll do this for a a few days/week and then drop another.
