We only use a handful of signs (eat, more, all done, please, and thank you) but we do have the book Sign With Your Baby by Dr. Joseph Garcia. I like the book - it has pictures of some signs in that are pretty helpful.
That being said, D doesn't exactly do the signs the correct way, so we've just tailored them to him once he started doing them back. Actually, now that I think about it, more is the only one he really does ASL - the others he has put his own spin on, which is pretty common.
We just learned a few basic signs and were given the Baby Einstein DVD. Not the best, but it worked for what we needed. To be honest - he didn't care to watch it at all, it taught us, so we taught them to him.
Back when I was little and my parents found out I was legally deaf they bought a book for me called, "Sesame Street Sign Language Fun with Linda Bove" By " Random House/ Children's Television Workshop.
I really like it because it is simple and basic. It has color, simple signs, and sesame street characters. Its a good book for simple basic first signs such as learning their ABC's, Colors, What they do when they wake up in the morning (brush your teeth etc..), basic animals, eating signs, sibiling signs etc...
I got this book back in 1988 so you might have a better chance finding it on amazon etc..but I still have it today and DS likes to look through it.
we have a couple of the Baby Einstein videos. She knows all of the signs in the videos. I haven't taught her any others outside of that. She uses the signs all the time. If she wants milk, she will sign milk and say it. If she sees a ball, she'll sign & say ball. She would just sign before she could talk, and it really helped a lot.
The Baby Einstein one. We've just borrowed it from the library a couple times. We use a fairly limited number of signs too. At this stage, mostly just "milk," "more" and "all done," because they're starting to talk more and usually we can manage to teach them to say the word once we figure out what they are trying to convey.
We took a class when DD was little and they suggested just observing DD and using movements she already does. So, for example, for "eat", we do an open hand to the mouth (kind of like blowing a kiss) and "more" we do an outstretched hand, palm down, opening and closing. Our teacher pointed out that the purpose is not to teach DD to communicate with ASL, but to give her ways to communicate with us. If you use movements they already make spontaneously, it's easier for them to learn.
I know ASL so I taught both kids myself at 6mos, but I bought a board book for DS called baby signs so I just read the book to him while showing him the signs.
