Monday Clicky Poll: Organic

Happy Monday!

This morning on The Today Show, Dr. Nancy Snyderman talked about the link between pesticides on produce and an increase in ADHD in kids. She mentioned that frozen blueberries and fresh strawberries are offenders. She also said that we should be wary of produce that comes from other countries and to peel fruits or veggies if you're concerned. Surely, we want our children to eat fruits and veggies, but it's scary to think they're at risk for ADHD. It's making me seriously consider joining a CSA group (community supported agriculture) to purchase organic produce through local means.

Does your family buy organic? How does your hubby feel about the added cost?

  • I checked the last option, for lack of one that fit our shopping...hehe.

     I buy all meat/dairy products organic....and about 80% of the produce.  I use Annie's organic Buying club for most of my produce.  They're awesome! I love Annie's!.  If you need info on it, let me know!.  I do a full share every other week, for $45 and get two full bags of yummy 100% organic stuff! :9

  • i voted sometimes...i do also peel and wash all my fruit and veges and i even run our meat through hot water before i actually start prepping it to marinate and cook.

  • I voted for about half at this point because that's what is available.  If I had a whole foods near me, I would shop there exclusively.  I'm not sure about the ADHD thing.  I have ADHD so I've done a lot of research about it and there is also a strong genetic link associated with it.  I am prepared to handle it if alexis has ADHD mainly because I know that it is a definite possibility since I do. 

    I do think that eating organic has many benefits and I think those far outweigh the cost, which is most cases is really not that much higher.

  • honestly, one of the main reasons we eat alot of organic food and meats its because the closest grocery stores to our home is Publix Greenwise and WHole Foods.

    Evelyn- someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think passing your meat through water before cooking it doesn't change much. The fact that it's labeled organic or other is based on what the animal was fed before being killed.

    Also, don't think because you buy from Whole Foods that you are getting "the best", alot of their frozen veggies and stuff comes from.... CHINA!! no joke. I rather would go and pick my fruit and veggies at a local farm than buy produce from CHINA!

    i hear ya, i still run it through hot water b/c god knows who touched the meat last before packaging it, even if it is not organic.

  • Virginia, there are plenty of produce co-ops in our area, I use to belong to one but I eat so much veggies, I end up going to the store alot anyway.

    We also have a few markets and "u pick" farms (like "The Girls U pick"that has plenty of organic stuff at great prices)!

    As long as you don't eat it raww though, you are fine!

    The only meat I wash my whole chickens to wash out the blood it's been sitting in.!

  • We do 1/2 and 1/2.  Any veggies/fruits that we give Isabella are organic.  During my pregnancy I also tried to eat mostly organic food.  I'm also trying to stay away from processed foods.  I just feel that there are sooo much yummy things to eat than why eat processed foods BUT you give me a bowl of ice cream, I'm not going to tell ya know.  The reason I try to buy mostly organic veggies/fruits, no antibiotic meats is because the thought of ingesting all those things freaks me out.  Also, I want to join a CSA, I've been looking into them for quiet a while because I think to eat what's in season always taste better. 

    But I think the main issue with our veggies/fruits is due to over cultivating.  (Dad's a farmer and explained it to me.) If we keep using the same soil over and over again then it never gets its nutrients back.

    We only buy organic when we have to - like when we need something specific from whole foods and end up buying stuff there or when the item we want is only available organic.

    But -- when I do get PG, we will be buying more organic fruits/ veggies and meats and when we have kids, I am planning on feeding them all organic, at least for the first few years.

  • Leanna, I agree with you about the benefits outweighing the cost when it comes to organic. I never really felt strongly about organic foods before....but now that we're getting ready to feed solids to Benjamin, it's an issue worth contemplating for me.

    Eli - I wish I had eaten more organic produce when I was pregnant. You're already preparing for a health pregnancy. High five!

    V and Rose - I'm definitely going to look into local farmers' markets and CSAs. I've been to the Girls Market, but perhaps I'll go more often.

    Evelyn - I rinse meat, too. ;) But I think I could do a better job at scrubbing fruits and veggies.

  • I checked about half/half.  We try to buy most our milk, eggs, fruits/veggies, and meat products organic, but at my local grocery store.  We have been doing this since living together b/c we read a lot and there are several docs in our families that recommended it.  We do it more to avoid the hormones used in livestock and the chemicals used in farming fruits/veggies.

    We don't buy EVERYTHING organic b/c we're both a little skeptical about what that really means since any product can slap on an organic label for meeting minimum requirements.  Another issue is that you don't really know what you're getting when you go to restaurants.  So, it's really difficult to maintain a 100% organic diet. 

    As for the link with ADHD, most of the research I've seen is also linked to genetics and the increase in diagnoses is just linked to having more information/treatments.  When our parents were growing up and before the IDEA, most kids who probably had ADHD were just overlooked or seen as a behavior problem. 

  • Just to add:   DH and I focus more on eating healthy than organic, like buying multi-grain bread and pasta, cooking in olive oil, eating lots of fruits and veggies, drinking fat free milk, etc. 

  • I try to buy whatever I can afford organic. We get most of our dairy products organic for sure and occasionally other produce/meat. It depends on the budget that week :) If budget were no concern it would be 100%.
