AW: My grocery shopping- Saved: 246.00 today- spent 54.00

Today I went grocery shopping- was a larger order this week because of Gisele's birthday party next weekend and I got diapers/wipes ~ however I still spent my usual amount. After all was said and done- between store savings, coupons that I clipped, coupons for free product that was mailed to me, and store coupons loaded to my store card- I saved 246.00.

I bought- all the normal fruits and veggies for the week, dairy: milk, eggs, OJ, shredded cheese, yogurt- and all of the meat for the birthday BBQ (burgers and chicken) and the soda- I bought a large box of Huggies diapers (12.00), a jumbo pack of diapers (3.00) and 8 packs of Huggies wipes (8.00) and it came to 54.00.

Between coupons and sale- I wound up getting 20 free products ~ all things that I absolutely use ~ so i wasn't just buying it because it was free.  This was the first time DH came grocery shopping with me in forever. I had my list done, coupons sorted by aisle and shopping took about 45 minutes.

So for 300.00 of groceries- I spent 54.00. Not too shabby. DH laughed and said he would never make fun of me again. Which I have heard before... so I won't hold my breath.

  • Woww!!

This is a stupid question- but how did you *learn* (or know how) to match all the coupons and stuff? I've tried and tried, but I can't ever seem to save more than a few cents and I feel like an idiot with all the coupons and lists.

    Any tips?

try to find a blog that does a 'match up' ~ there are blogs out there that take the time to sit and match it all up for you. they take the weekly sale paper and match with the coupons and the match up tells you what week the coupon insert was from- or gives you a link to print an online coupons. MAJOR time saver. depending on  your area- these sites are helpful

    www.hip2save.com

    www.livingrichwithcoupons.com

    www.mamacheaps.com

    www.forthemommas.com

those three do some really nice coupon matching.

  • These links are great... but I still can't wrap my head around all this.  My fresh produce & meat alone would be over $54.  And I buy local when I can.   I guess that's what happens when I've been blessed with a kid who really, really likes fruits & veggies!

  • That's incredible! I did about the opposite yesterday.... spent 220, saved 35. lol

The only deals I find on those sites for my area are walgreens or cvs mostly. Never really much for food. We don't have rite aid or any other chains that do awesome deals. :(

Jen- i know you said you shop at the commissary- but have you even checked into the local food markets in  your area- just for cost comparision purposes. I know that commissaries have some great prices- but it could be worth looking into. Saving 35.00 is a great start! you are on your way. See where I really luck out is my store allows me to 'load' coupons to my savings card AND use a coupon. So a box of Huggies diapers were on sale for 17.99 ~ the store allows me to load a 3.00 coupon. I couple that with a 3.00 printable that just came out- which gives me 12.00 for a box of 82 diapers. 14.5 cents a diaper (sz 4). not too bad. ~ the jumbos were on sale for 7.99 - I loaded a coupon for 2.00 off ~ coupled that with a 3.00 printable = 3.00 for 40 diapers (size 2) = 7.5 cents a diaper. (A STEAL- and a baby shower gift) lol.

so what i am trying to say- is finding a store that is going to HELP you maximize your coupons is critical. My store- not only allows you to load coupons- they have two different flyer and in store 'books' with coupons. Couple that with sales- and that gives you free stuff- including fruits and veggies. It just makes sense for me to shop there at this chain.

  • Thats truly amazing. I'm so impressed. I am a terrible shopper! What store do you shop at?

  • The only place I've found that doubles coupons is homeland - the times i've gone there for sale items I later found cheaper elsewhere, which pissed me off royally! lol

We have a couple other smaller stores, but they don't have cards or rewards programs. They do have cheap prices, but I was driving myself nuts trying to juggle which place had what for cheaper. And undoubtedly I'd get something at Store A then see it at Store B for less.

I need to look around some more, maybe mix it up with some other local stores. The commissary doesn't really have generics either - but their name brand prices often compare to generics. It really depends on the item.

I second this question.  I also live in the Philly suburbs(originally from NEP) and am curious as to which chain you shop at.  My DH things I'm crazy as it is with trying to save $ and I apparently have lots to learn.

  • OK, which store did you go to- and next time take me with you so I can learn from the master!

    Same here!

Also, what stores are you shopping at that do this coupon loading thing? I have never heard of it. I have the Vons, Albertons and Ralphs Club cards...is that the type of card you are talking about?

I mainly shop at Henry's because I rarely have to pay more than $1/pound for my produce. Except asparagus- it's a splurge at $4.99/pound.

  • That is just awesome! I need to get something going like that. What a HUGE savings!

  • Usually I shop at Pathmark- in my area it is always the cheapest.

However- today I am stopping at Genuardi's for a few things (I only go in there for the sales)

I am picking up 10 things and will spend 5.00

2 boxes of Captain Crunch ~ .50 a box with coupon & sale

2 boxes of Cheerios ~ .40 a box with coupon doubled & sale

    2 'blocks' of cheese ~ 2.00 total

1 bottle of Palmalive dish detergent ~ .50 with coupon and sale

1 bag of Cheetos ~ .29 after coupon and sale

1 box of 8 yoplait yogurts 2.00 after coupon and sale. (25 cents each- ALWAYS go price per item when buying 'bigger box items and KNOW your 'per price' cost. in this area .30 cents for a yogurt is a good price)

1 jar of Classico spaghetti sauce .50 after coupon and sale

    10 things- 5.00

THAT is how you stockpile. We were running low on cereal- so a good time to stock up.

    I think that's actually $7.09.  ;-)  Sorry, I couldn't help it, LOL.

Anyway, I love reading posts like these, so please post more often!  I'm going to Safeway today to stock up on Kashi cereal.  They are on sale $2/box, and I have 6 $1 off coupons, so I'll be getting 6 boxes for $6, which is a great price on Kashi.

  • I live in NJ, just over the bridge, I even shop in Philly sometimes. Anyway, I was wondering where you shopped too. I will start focusing on Pathmark, there is one 5 minutes from my house.

So my question is: where do you put all this food in your house?

I am blessed with a large pantry- and a deep freezer in my basement. And like I said- a lot of this extra stuff is for Gisele's birthday party on Sat. Organizing perishables is important- i use a FIFO system (first in- first out) and rotate can goods and perishables so nothing goes bad.
