Toddler vs. twin bed

DD is nearly 20 months old and still sleeping in a crib.  However DC#2 is arriving in September, and we need to either move her to a toddler bed or twin bed.  I have heard that the toddler beds are a waste of money and just to go straight to a twin bed, but I'm not sure.  Any thoughts?  How long does a child use a toddler bed?

Also, if I go the twin bed route, I want to get a bedroom set somewhere.  Any ideas of stores in the area that sell nice kids (not just baby) furniture?

 TIA!

Re: Toddler vs. twin bed

  • If I were in your shoes with another one on the way, and I wasn't planning to use the toddler bed conversion of the crib, I'd just go straight for a twin bed.  That's what was done when we were kids, and we all did just fine.  There is no way I'd spend the $ on a toddler bed that they're going to use for two years.  The only experience I have with this is my nephew was was in his from about age 2-4 before they converted it to his full size bed with the crib headboard and footboard.  If putting her in a twin bed makes you nervous, you can always start with the mattress on the floor or you can get the rails that go alongside the mattress.

Sorry I don't have any recs for a place to shop.  Good luck!

  • We went from a Crib to a twin bed when DS#1 was 18 months before we had baby #2 he transitioned REALLY well ~ we used the bedrails AND at the foot of his bed we put a pool noodle onder the fitted sheet so he had a stopper incase he ended up at the end of the bed because his footboard was level to the matress on that end.

We found his bedroom set at Ashleys I think we paid somewhere in the ballpark of $1300 for a headboard, footboard, mattress, tall dresser, longer 6 drawer dresser mirror and bed side table...it's not the greatest quality, but for a 2 yr old it is fine ...hopefully for a while :)

  • Mia has a toddler bed only because the ILs bought it for her last year. MIL found the frame at a garage sale for next to nothing, so they got that and a mattress. Otherwise, she definitely would have gone straight to a twin. When Nick is out of the crib, we'll probably just have him go right to a twin and get twin beds for both of them and call it a day rather than having him go to a toddler, then a twin.
  • DD#1 went to a twin bed at around 20 months, too, for the same reason.  It really only took a few nights and she was used to it.  We started with just putting the mattress and boxspring on the floor without the frame to see how much she'd move, and so she could climb in and out herself.  Then we added the frame and used a bedrail, and she was good to go!  We bought kids' furniture for both girls at Hornings in Annville.  They have a good selection of quality furniture, and the prices are decent for the quality.

I don't have any experience transtioning, but our pedi brought something up at DD's 15 month that I never thought about - depending on big/tall your DD is, she may out grow a toddler bed pretty quickly.  Something else to take into consideration.

  • we are going to go with the toddler bed first, but only because a friend of ours was getting rid of one and we are almost ready to transition DS.  NB Liebman has nice stuff, but I think they are pricey.  You can also get some cute stuff at Ashley's and Value City.  I got my living room furniture at Ashley's about 7 years ago and it has held up really well, and we got our bed at Value City.  The bed itself was on sale for like $110 at the time we got it so we spent a lot on really good mattress and box spring.  We get tons of compliments on how nice our bed is.
