3rd Trimester

Tired of people giving their two cents...

I am very tired of people giving their opinion about my pregnancy and what I should be doing or not doing. My boyfriend and I rented some movies today because we are passing the time until I start my induction on Wednesday and then go into the hospital on Thursday. My boyfriend put his status on FB as "so Jenna and I rented 9 movies to watch this week while we pass the time waiting for Emily to be born. We are watching Edge of Darkness right now and it is pretty awesome." and my cousin wrote "Heck with watching movies-GET YOUR SLEEP!!!!!!!!" This is about the 5th or 6th time she has commented on something we were doing and told us we need to rest while we can because having a baby is hard. (only not so polite) I realize that having a baby is hard. I realize that I won't sleep much at all. I don't need a constant reminder and for the most part I sleep very well! What should I do? Sleep all day and do nothing? I think she will be going on the hide list on FB.

DD#1 is 3! And LO#2 is on his/her way! Due Feb 26th, 2014.

BFP#1: EDD 5/7/2010 born on 5/20/2010. A little girl named Emily.

  • The whole "sleep while you can" is bullshiit.  I don't know one woman who is 9 months pregnant and sleeping comfortably or for longer periods than a few hours.  At least I'm not.

  • Unfortunately, we can't store sleep!  Maybe your cousin doesn't realize this?  I say watch your movies and do what you want to do to pass the time - I'd rather watch a movie than sleep, too, but I'm not much of a sleeper.  GL and I guess just try to ignore the unsolicited advice... I know, easier said than done!

Exactly... I have to pee like 10 times a night!

My boyfriend said he is going to comment her back with a picture of Clive Owen from the movie I'll Sleep When I am Dead. haha.

  • I hate these comments, too.  I also hate being reminded of all the things I "won't be able to do" when the baby comes.  I get that the baby will rearrange our lives, but it's not as if I'll never leave the house, go the gym, or sleep again--which is what everyone seems to make it sound like.

  • Agreed about the sleep you get in the third tri.  WHAT sleep?  I'm up and peeing every hour and a half.  Literally.  And yes, I do cut off my water later at night.  Doesn't matter.

Do what the heck you wanna do and just ignore her.  In her mind, she's trying to help.  Just remember that and don't get too worked up about it.  Enjoy your movies!

  • I mean it is true. I think fondly of the days I could sleep in! but I also think fondly of days where DH and I could hang out and watch movies. =)

This. Between getting up four times a night to pee, the ridiculous back pain that wakes me up every time I move in bed, the heartburn that has me popping Tums at 3am, and the insomnia that thinks it's my BFF several times a week, I'm not sure that a good night's sleep is in my near future. I say, enjoy your movie marathons!

  • I'm so glad people aren't giving me supid advice like about sleeping. It's 1:30am here nad guess what? I'm awake. Like I was last night.. AND the night before and so on. It's not easy sleeping right now. And I sure as hell would rather be spending time with DH while it's still the two of us than sleep all the time.
  • I think people feel the need to bring up the no sleep thing because they want you to be as miserable as they are (or were). Besides, we may not get much sleep when the baby comes but at least there's a good chance it will be better quality sleep because you won't have an aching body, heartburn, potty breaks all night, etc. The list goes on. I'm kinda looking forward to sleep when the baby is here.
  • The part I didn't get was she was telling me to sleep at 5 o'clock! I am not going to sleep all day. It just can't and won't happen.

  • Don't take it so literally. I used to get all worked up over this to- like, what- I'm supposed to just have narclepsy and sleep whenever?

Then I had DD and I understood what everyone meant. The sleep thing drastically changes- for good. 2.5 years later and I still haven't set my alarm or slept past 6:00am.

Take it to mean "lay in bed and do nothing. Watch movies in bed. Doze off, order to-go, read in bed"

  • I feel the same way.  No matter what we say to people, or put on our FB's, there's two friends of mine who constantly comment with their two cents.  The other day I made a comment on my FB about getting a full night of sleep, without waking up and of course, one comments about how I will be lucky if I get to sleep an hour straight when the baby comes.  I also said something about how hard it is to work throughout the night and fast for the glucose test and a friend said "Thought you took it already?"  And I explained that I had taken the 1 hour one and they said I barely failed.  So she comments "Then you shouldn't have to take the 3 hour one."  Thanks for your advice, but there is a reason I go to a doctor!!!!

  • Ah yes, the wonderful comments.  I thought it was bad when I was pregnant and everyone felt they had a right to be up in my business, but when you have a child it is a whole different story.  Not a day goes by where I don't have at least one person comment on some aspect of what I am doing wrong with my mothering.  As if a grandparent that sees this kid for 3 hours every few weeks knows best about their behavior and development rather than his mom who spends 24/7 with him?!  Drives me up a wall.  Granted, I find myself always giving people advice too.  Guess once you have gone through it you just feel like you need to share.  I try to keep my mouth shut for the most part when women tell me their stories or give comments, but when my FIL makes some comment like "you should be gaining more weight or the baby might not be healthy" then I get pissed and am like "really?!!  and you would know this, how?  because you were the father to 1 child 30 years ago?".  That kind of crap annoys me:)

SO true.  I hated when people told me that, and when they tell other people that simply to instill fear in them.  It's a load of crap!  DH and I managed to do all kinds of the same things we used to do, with DD in tow!  It'll be more difficult now with the twins as well, but only as difficult as we allow it to be.  We certainly don't need to be "told."  And as for sleep... contrary to popular belief, a lot of newborns sleep a LOT!!!

  • i can't be pissed about sleep comments because i feel like they're true.  i didn't truly appreciate sleep until it was too late!  it was the hardest thing i dealt with, and sleep has not been the same since DS was born.  sure newborns sleep a lot but waking up every 2-3 hours for weeks and weeks on end gets old really fast.  waking up to pee and waking up to console an inconsolable baby are not comparable.  i get cranky when i don't have solid sleep...and i'm dreading that when #2 gets here.  hopefully he will be better about it than his big brother was.
