Can I do anything for my stuffy 1 year old?

I can thankfully say, that this is the first time that DS has ever been sick. Yay bfing! Though that doesn't help the fact that my little guy is so congested right now... he's not coughing or sneezing but he just has a runny nose and I can hear the phlegm in his throat... I've been using the aspirator just about every hour or two, which of course he hates. But even right afterwards he's always breathing through his mouth. I know he must be miserable, I hate feeling like that. And now that they've said that cold medicine isn't good for little ones I'm pretty stuck. Is there anything else I can do to help him out? I plan on calling the ped on Monday if he is still feeling like this, but was just wondering if I could get some advice from you experienced Mommas [=

  • Vicks makes a plug in unit (almost like a glade plug in) and you can buy the strips to put in there. it helps when gisele is congested.

  • We use a vaporizer in DD's bedroom for naps and overnight when she's stuffy.  It helps her immensely.

We have a humidifier in his room that I turned on for the first time in a while last night, is there a difference between that and a vaporizer?

  • If you cannot find the vicks strips, rub vicks on back or chest or you can fill a mug with hot water and put a spoonful of vicks in it. We always have runny noses around here and that really helps. Also, run a hot shower and close the door let the bathroom steam up and then sit with baby in there for as long as you can stand.

They're the same thing.  I think vaporizer is an older term.  I'm showing my age.  Embarrassed

  • I swear by Vicks on the feet.  Slather some on there then put on some socks you don't care much about (sometimes it leaves grease stains).

The plug ins are great too.

And you can use saline drops in their nose to keep things moist and moving.

  • You can also try to recline him a little. I used to put a pillow under the matteress before he was crawling all around and it would prop his head up.  The last time he was REALLY congested I pulled out the old swing and he slept in that. Also, gotta agree with the humidifier and vicks

This is what we do for our LO and she's 2. Good luck to you!
