Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Visiting from Multiples/2nd tri

First of all CONGRATULATIONS on your beautiful babies - I LOVE looking at your siggy pics and can't wait til our little girls are here!!!  I need your recommendations/criticisms on bottles

Nothing is in stone with our plan when the babies are born - hoping to pump as long as possible, but eventually plan to formula feed our girls when necessary.

What bottles did you try that you LOVE/HATE???

Thank you so much for your recommendations... DH and I are STUCK on this one!!!

Re: Visiting from Multiples/2nd tri

  • I heard Dr. Brown bottles were the best and spent a ton of money on the start up system (they are expensive). When LO came she had REALLY bad gas & hated the Dr. Brown bottles. I tried Platex Drop Ins and she LOVES them and they helped wonderfully w/ the gas. They are very easy to use too. I BF & pump, but my friend uses them for formula and they work great too.

Someone told me not to buy a lot of bottles until you find out which type your LO likes...I wish I listened to this advice! lol Maybe #2 will like the Dr. Brown bottles!?

Congrats on twins, how exciting! :)

  • Now that I am back at work, I am exclusively pumping and using three kinds of bottles with our twins-  The Playtex Drop- Ins, Avent and the Medela bottles that come with the pump.

I love the Drop-ins for going to my IL's house (they watch the babies)  Its so easy to just clean the nipples when I bring them home after work.  Plus, we use the Up and Up Brand (target) for the actual Drop-ins and they are cheaper.

I also like the Avent bottle and although people complain about them leaking, ours never did.  But there is nothing special about it.

The best part of the Medela bottles is that you can pump right into them and just stick a nipple on the top and feed. (although you can buy adapters for other bottles, too like Avent and Drop-ins)

My suggestion is to not buy too many bottles until you know what your babies like.  We started with 3 drop-ins and 2 avent and once I confirmed they liked them, we bought more.  I also had some Nuk bottles and neither baby would take them.

    Good luck!

  • I tried Dr. Browns, Breastflow, Drop-ins, VentAirt, and Avent but the only kind of bottles my DD will take is the Nuk ones. They are the only ones that she didn't make a mess with too.

ETA: DD uses Nuk paci's so that may have something to do with it.

This is actually what I was worried about... I've heard to wait and see what they like... but how quickly did you know exactly what they "like"?   And how do you know if they "like" them - do you mean as long as they'll feed from them, it's good?

  • Loved playtex drop ins until DD developed colic. Love Dr.Browns awesome with colicky and babies that spit up a lot. hated tommee tippee they are a waste of money Congrats on your twin girls!

  • We bought a ton of the drop-in's and love them now, but in the beginning (JJ was a preemie) the low flow nipple was still too big for him and it made a mess.

So we used (and still use) the evenflo purely comfi bottles and they were a lifesaver (and inexpensive too).  We still use them, but they are a pain to get the formula in and when you shake to mix the formula the milk leaks/sprays all over, even with the cap (so we shake them into the sink).

  • Some bottles give babies gas, sometimes they don't like the nipple and sometimes they just wont drink out of them.  We were lucky and didn't have much of a problem, except for the Nuk bottle, but you never know.

  • We've tried three different bottles (all with breastmilk).  The first was playtex drop-ins with the pre-formed liners from target.  My mom & husband experienced problems with these leaking so they hate them.  I'm almost wondering if it wasn't because of the liners I tried.  It is a little hard to read how much they have ate but I like how you can push the air out of them.

The next one we used was the Medala bottles that came with my pump.  Its very easy to read the lines and there hasn't been any problem with them leaking.  We have noticed that if you get the lid too tight the nipple will collapse but if you loosen it just a little bit the problem is gone.  I recently bought another set of these and my Mom says these nipples don't do it anymore.

We also tried Dr. Brown's bottles.  They are easy to read but there is a lot of parts to clean.  They are supposed to help reduce the amount of air that a baby takes in.  I believe we like these too (I never personally use them since I just feed her directly from the breast).  I sorta dislike them only because the nipples aren't similar to the breast but since we are past the stage of developing nipple confusion I don't worry.

  • I bought 1 bottle of a few different kinds.  We ended up really liking the Tommee Tippees and the Medela bottles that came with our pump.  DD will also take the cheap Gerber bottles.  She hated the Nuk bottle, it came out too fast for her.

  • DS is EBF but gets occasional bottles. The only one he will drink from is Tommee Tippee.

Thank you!  I will let you know!

Thanks to all of you for your replies... many MANY things to consider... and I think we're gonna buy a few of a few different kinds (including some of the Dr. Browns - it seems the multiples mom's like those - although i worry about more to clean).  I'm glad to know not to exclusively choose one brand right now... just hoping its obvious early what is going to work!!

  • I EBF and pump so when we go out I bring a bottle of milk. We use Drop-ins and Nuk Orthodontic. I agree though, dont buy a lot until you know what theyre going to like. Ive spent a small fortune on bottles and she doesnt even use them but like once every two weeks. :) Congrats on twins!

We tried Breastflow, Medela, Born Free, Dropins, and the Playtex Ventaire. I HATED the Breastflow, the medela were okay (and very convienient for pumping). I didn't care for the dropins (I always prepare bottles in advance and when the BM seperated I had trouble remixing with the liners), We loved the Born Free but they were too expensive. Finally settled on the Ventaire. I totally agree with PP that said get a couple of each and see how your DDs do. The only bottle that I bought was the breastflow...the rest I had gotten as "free gifts" from the various registries, mailing lists, etc.
  • This post makes me smile because for some reason picking bottles to put on the registry was just the toughest decision for me.  I dont know why but the bottle thing stressed me out!

Turns out DD will take any bottle.  I can switch back and forth and shes fine with it.  But the evenflo gave her gas so we mostly use the dr. browns, which helped a lot with the gas problem.  Washing them is a pain though, so many parts.

LOL... this is definately us... I've been so laid back about everything else, but all the reviews about EVERY bottle are mixed and I really don't want to waste money, but we want SOME to be ready (Well, hopefully we'll have easy going babies like your DD!)
