Clicky Poll..showering in hospital

Several people I have talked to said things about not showering at the hospital after having their baby because the showers were gross.. Just curious about everyone else!

[Poll]

Re: Clicky Poll..showering in hospital

  • I was in the hospital for 5 days. After a labour attempt and then an emerg.  c/s, a shower was absolutely necessary. Sponge baths didn't cut it for me.

  • It could have been the grossest shower in the world and it would have been better than my own grossness!  The shower in the hospital was the only thing that made me feel somewhat human again.
  • Oh yeah, a shower was definitely necessary after c-section and all that. I don't see why a shower would be nasty... it's a hospital! Mine was perfectly clean.

  • I sneezed and blood dripped down my leg onto the floor on my way to the bathroom, I would have stood in there for days if I could have.
  • I loved showering in the hospital.  I don't remember it's actual state but it felt sooooo good after all I had been through.

  • I was wary of showering in the hospital before I gave birth. I'm a nurse and have seen some nasty stuff in showers. But I forgot all of it when I saw how nasty I was and jumped right in--no shower shoes even!
  • I showered the next morning and it was amazing, even though it was tiny with bad water pressure- it didn't matter. I did bring flip flops to wear though!

    YES!!!

  • I just wore flip flops -- no big deal.  I focused on the water, and the fact that nothing felt better after days in bed and a c-section than getting clean and dressed.  It made me human again, kind of, and I never would have passed that up.

  • Any shower is so welcomed at that point, IMO

Mine was either freezing or scalding hot.  I had to stand out of the stream, gather hot water on a washcloth then squeeze it on myself once it cooled off a bit.  And those showers were sill welcomed.

I can't imagine not bathing for those few days

  • Oh no...showering was completely necessary. It really relaxed me after the whole excitement of having a baby.
  • Maybe I was really lucky, but the bathroom in my hospital room was sparkling clean: it almost looked like it had just been renovated. It was soooo nice b/c I had no idea what to expect as there was an older part of the L/D ward that wasn't so nice...the midwife on duty when I went in originally gave us this dumpy room, but at that point, I was trying to hold it together while I labored, so the state of my postpartum room was the last of my worries. Lucky for me, DH managed to get us moved to the nicer wing of the hospital while I was in labor: he. Is. the Best!

  • Eh...I never gave it a second thought with any of my kids.  After having a baby a shower is a must!  I didn't even have long labors (longest was 10 hours) and still felt like I needed a shower asap.  The bathroom in my room when I had my third was amazing.  I paid to have a private rooms since there I would have had a room mate.  The shower was huge with a really nice shower head too!  I looved that shower.  I also loved my showers after having my first 2 even though they were itty bitty.  I could have done without the nurse coming in as soon as the water shut off to help me get dressed (my first kid) though.  That was just weird.
  • How could someone NOT shower after birth (or shortly afterwards)?????

I mean, they could have put a kiddie pool on the floor and I would have found a way to get in it.

Unless they went home the very same day, I have to say that is very gross. After all of the stuff that has come out of you........ Ewwww.....

ditto!  I could have cared less!  I did hate that the towels were not thick and soft, but was not bringing my own (for obvious reasons :) )

I couldn't wait to take a shower. I was hospitalized from Wed-Sat prior to having DS. After they moved me back into the maternity wing, I was told I could take a shower. I took one as soon as I got there and was yelled at b/c I was supposed to wait until they fixed my C/S bandages, oh well. If I hadn't shower at the hospital, I would've gone a week without showering.

  • Heck yes! I was showering less than 24 hours after my c/s.

DH did too because I wanted him to stay with me. But the showers at my hospital are nice, very hotel like. I did wear flip-flops in there though.

  • As soon as I was able to get up and move, I only wanted to be with DS in the NICU. I never even thought of a shower. I was only there post-DS 2.5 days.

ETA: The first thing I did when we got home was shower though. Then we went back to the hospital.

  • I was in labor for 25 hours and then had a c/s. I was also unexpectedly induced, so it had been about 18 hours since I showered before I was admitted into the hospital. I felt like I had about 17 layers of sweat on my skin, not to mention practically being covered in lochia from the waist down.

A family of possums could have been living in my shower and I would have used it.

  • Unless you know you're going home in a short few hours, I can't imagine someone NOT showering after giving birth.  Sorry, but that's gross.
  • I was in the hospital for 5 days... I definitely showered!  That time was the only time it was quiet and just me during those 5 days.... no visitors, no nurses, just me and the water!  The shower was nice at my hospital but I had to have ILs bring me my toiletries because the ones the hospital had weren't working for me :)

Yes. Oh yes, this. Taking that shower was one of the best feelings in the world.

I cannot imagine not showering after giving birth, unless something traumatic happened, like having your LO in the NICU.

I took one of the longest showers, I felt so gross before I got in.  I had been in labor for 24 hours before my c-section and it was another 20 after my c-section before I was able to take one...eww!

I did take flip flops and didn't think twice about the cleanliness.

This. Word for word. I just brought my own toiletries and wore a crappy pair of target $3 flip flops in the shower. Tossed them after my hospital stay.

  • The shower after labour/birth was heavenly.  I think I stood there for a good 20 minutes after cleaning up.  It was AWESOME.

I was asking about when I was allowed to shower not too long after DS was born.

  • If my hospital shower was gross, I didn't notice.  I went into PTL on a Thursday afternoon, and DD was born early Saturday morning.  My first shower in that time frame was later Saturday morning, and it was much needed.  Especially after going through labor and feeling pretty gross.  I didn't go home til Monday morning, and I could not imagine having to wait that long to shower.

This. Except I was there for 7 days, not 5. I showered at LEAST twice. :)

  • I didn't shower.  It wasn't even offered to me.  Maybe it's a NYC thing....they needed the delivery room.  I guess I could've showered in my shared recovery room, but I never even though about it.  Maybe I'm gross LOL.  My delivery was fast and pretty easy, so I didn't feel gross.  I was just tired, so I slept. Confused

  • Our shower was extremely clean... then again I'm not really a germaphobe and it felt so great to shower- I think it's a little strange to be grossed out by a hospital shower!
  • Where are some of you all having babies? Third world countries? I mean really, hospitals clean their rooms and bathrooms. Of course I showered and didn't think twice about the cleanliness of the shower stall.

Not showering after delivering a baby is gross.

  • I had to shower-I was so gross from laboring for 24 hrs and then being stuck in bed for another 24 while on mag sulfate.  I just threw a couple of wash cloths on the floor to stand on!
