Babies: 3 - 6 Months

My baby throws up after eating rice cereal.

We have tried making it really soupy and she still throws up after eating eat.  She also throws up bile.  I called the pediatrician and they said to put a smaller amount of rice cereal in with her bottle and she still does it. We have tried mixing it with breast milk, formula, and a half breast milk/half formula mixture.   Has anyone else had this problem?  The first time we tried was when she was 4 months and she took it then and was fine (She was a little fussy.). This started happening when she was about 5 months.  She is now almost 6 months and I am afraid to do anything until we go back to the doctor next week.

  • I would say stop feeding it and try something else.  She might be allergic/intolerant or it could be a GI issue.  If she does fine on something else, you'll know its the rice cereal causing the problem.

Could you try avocado or sweet potato?

This would be my suggestion too.  You can also try mashed banana.

  • This happened to us and we added a 1/5 of a tablespoon of applesauce and now she takes it just fine.
  • I have no advice for you but wanted you to know that we are having the same problem.  My DS has thrown up both the rice cereal and the baby oatmeal as well as sweet potato and banana (the banana was just today).  It gets so bad that he throws up bile multiple times even after just a few tastes of the cereal.  It's happened three times now - the first time we thought it was a stomach flu so didn't think twice about feeding the oatmeal a few days later, then it happened again so I tried rice mixed with breast milk today as well as some mashed banana and it happened again.  I'm scared to try anything else now.  I'm trying to decide whether to just hold off on solids and wait for his six month check up (which isn't until June 9th) or call the pedi Monday morning.  I'd really appreciate a pm if you find anything out.  TIA
