Travel question RE: passport/name change

I never got my name changed on my passport after I got married, and my passport is still valid.  I will need my passport sooner than the estimated processing time to receive a new one.  To avoid paying extra to have it expedited, is it crazy of me to just book my trip in my maiden name?  All other forms of ID that I have are in my new name.  Could I run into a problem somewhere?  Sorry if this seems like a silly question.

Re: Travel question RE: passport/name change

  • Your plane tickets need to be in the same name as on your passport.

    That's all I know.  Sorry.

  • It will not be a problem.  You don't have to present an ID (driver's license, etc.) if you present your passport.  My passport is still in my maiden name and we took a cruise last year, leaving from FL, but going internationally and I had zero problems.  HTH!!
  • As long as your plane tickets match your passport and you only show your passport as ID (ticket counter too) you are fine to travel under your maiden name.

That's what I was thinking...as long as my plane ticket is in my maiden name I should be ok, right?  I guess my only concern would be if I lost my passport during the trip and didn't have any other ID in my maiden name.

  • I just did this.  I used my passport with  my madein name.  Just booked the ticket as my passport name is.  No issues.  I changed my "regular name" 5 years ago.
  • Not a silly questions at all.I had this same problem last month. I didn't have time to change my passport name for a trip overseas so I booked the ticket under my maiden name and had no problems whatsoever. Granted, I flew into Switzerland and passport control there is a breeze. But returning to the States was not an issue either. Have fun on your trip!
  • If you're worried about losing your passport, you could always bring a photocopy of your marriage license with you. I bet with that and your driver's license (in your married name) you'll still be able to get home if anything goes wrong.
  • I'm facing the same issue.  It still makes me nervous to travel in my maiden name via my passport because my name has "legally" been changed to my married name.  We plan on traveling the last week in July so I should be safe if I apply for my passport this week.  I would just be paranoid...

There is no need to be paranoid about this. As long as your name matches in your passport and your ticket it doesn't matter. I have been traveling on my maiden name for 3.5 years, and we travel overseas all the time, just came back from Asia yesterday. It is completely fine. We scanned in our passports and emailed them to our parents so if something happened they can send them to us.

  • as someone else mentioned. I would bring a photocopy of my marriage lic. AND (always) a photocopy of your passport... just in case. but it should be fine

i am in the same boat (need to get new passport!)

  • I received a card when we got Kendall's passport that we keep her name and passport number on and carry with us at all times while traveling. I went ahead and put mine on there too. DH has to show a lot more paperwork to get into the US so he was on his own, LOL. Even in his own country he had to show his passport, permanent resident card AND his work visa, just to leave Switzerland. Weird that he had to show the work visa. At least the first two made sense.
