My husband is 40 and I just turned 36. We decided to opt out of all the tests they offer to tell if they baby has a chromo or downs syndrome. I know we would keep the child no matter what. Has anyone else opted out?
Hey we are so similiar my hubby turned 40 in Dec and i turned 36 in Oct. The only test I took was the blood screening, which turned out fine. I didnt do any further testing becaus i felt like it wasnt necessary. Good luck
We just did the first trimester screening (blood test and nuchal translucency screening test) and a 20 week ultrasound. We turned down everything else because the tests all came back normal, and haven't been doing all the growth ultrasounds or 3d ultrasounds I hear about on the 3rd trimester board.
We did the first trimester screen because it wasn't invasive. Had it come back with results that were not normal, I am not sure we would have done a CVS or amnio or not. We would have made that decision at the time.
We didn't do any tests. We had an ultrasound at 10 weeks that looked perfect so we decided then not to do any further testing. We had another ultrasound at 18 weeks that again looked perfect so we are pretty excited.
Had soft markers for Downs with our first pregnancy and even then did not do testing. We had a perfect little girl and are hoping for the same with this one.
We didn't do any test. So far everything has been fine. We're in the mind set that we'll take whatever God gives us. This is my 5th pregnancy and we have 1 DD (15yrs) so this baby is been in the making for a long time. We're just grateful to be this far along. Also when you have your sono they can get an ideal if baby has any problems.
I went back and forth about this. I went in today for the NT scan and the doctor talked to us about the sequential screening (which was not really offered or available when I was pg with my DS, who was stillborn, or my DD, who is perfectly healthy). Anyway, my husband wanted the testing done and since it is his baby too I obliged. The NT scan is non invasive so we had the ultrasound which so far looks great - and I went in for the blood work today. I'll go back in a few weeks for another blood test and the results of all combined will tell us something...I already stressed that I do not want an amnio or CVS test...which is why I didn't want the test done in the first place. BUT, since our first baby had some major issues I think it makes my husband feel better to know that everything is ok. If it were completely up to me I would have just the 20 week ultrasound and that's it...but my husband does have some say in the matter. LOL. So far the issues that my son had are not showing up with this baby (abdominal wall defect and a heart defect) and our DD is perfectly healthy so I remain hopeful that this baby is just fine. It's a hard choice to make though, at least for me it was.
I talked it over with my DH and my dr. If there was any indications of the possibility of a problem, there is nothing the dr would do in utero. She said it would just give us time to prepare for the possibility (since the test is not 100% accuarte there is a chance of a false positive.). Since there is nothing that the dr could do to change the results and the results may not even be real, we decided to skip all those tests. We are having our u/s next week to check for gender and size of development.
I'm 38, DH turned 46 yesterday 5th baby, 6th pregnancy. We only do the initial mother's health bloodwork and the 20 wk US. We get who we get, for however long they are here. US can show a lot of markers for issues that you might want to be aware of just as an FYI.
Yes. We knew we would have this baby no matter what. We did have several ultrasounds though to be safe. Early on they found cists on his head that dissipated with time. Then they did some because the amount of amnionic fluid appeared high, so I had an extra glucose test done. Everything has been coming back normal since. I measured 2 weeks ahead a few weeks ago, but they still say he'll only be around 7lbs at birth. That's fine with me, my first was under 6lbs. I'm actually thankful for all the extra u/s because I had a miscarriage last year and they really ease my mind that he's really coming and will be ok.

This is us EXACTLY! I didn't want any unnecessary worry and we planned on keeping God's creation no matter what. Even though I'm almost 37 and obese, my doc says that my pregnancy is textbook, if not better. We opted out of most testing, just had our 2nd u/s only because they couldn't get all measurements the first time and just found out today that EVERYTHING looks good!
Other than the ultrasound and the regular blood tests for my health - we opted out of the rest of the tests. They must have asked me to do them 5 different times. We would never abort for any reason so why bother - besides I have so many risk factors that we have several more ultrasounds scheduled and we're delivering at a hospital with a level III NICU anyway so any problems could be addressed. I'm 38, my husband is 42 and this is our 3rd child, all pregnancies were high risk - to me more so than to the baby.
mama2many!! Me too!! Oh thank goodness! I thought I was the only one! I'm 38, I have four children (ages 16-10) and this is my 5th baby (surprise after vasectomy)...
I didn't get any tests either. I am glad to see that some others didn't either and mostly everyone turns out fine. I think those tests scare more than soothe.
I'm 35 and my husband is 41. We opted out of all the tests and talked to our OB extensively about this and she was supportive. She said that it was very likely that if it were anything big that would mean we'd need to deliver at a different hospital or prepare in some way, we'd likely see it on the 20 week ultrasound. Our ultrasound went great and she had no markers for any of the disabilities/diseases.
At first, I leaned toward getting the tests done, but my DH was not interested in them. We've now come to the conclusion that the test results don't matter. We will love and raise the child that God blesses us with, no matter what.
It is encouraging to see so many other expectant mothers who are on this same path.
Thanks for this post! My best to you all!
Be blessed!

I already declined the option for amnio or CVS when it's that time in the pregnancy, being 36.
I will do the AFP and the Nucchal scan, mainly so I would know what to expect. Termination is not an option for us.
