starting cereal = fussy baby?

We started DS on some rice cereal today - 1 T in his morning bottle and 1 T in his night bottle.  He got really fussy after eating his first bottle, but I just figured he was tired.  I put him down and he had a great nap.  I fed him his night bottle and tried to put him to bed.  He screamed for an hour.  There was nothing wrong per se - changed diaper, put Orajel on his teeth, made sure he wasn't overheated, etc.  I'm wondering if his stomach is bothering him because of the cereal.  Has anyone experienced that?

  • Does he have reflux?  Is that why you are putting the cereal in his bottle?  If he doesn't have reflux (ie, if your pedi didn't tell you to) try NOT putting it in his bottle.  Feed him the cereal the normal way.

  • Nope, no reflux.  The pedi said to start feeding him cereal either by spoon or in his bottle if his eating was increasing more and more.  She said in the bottle would be a good way to start.  Anyway, he's been eating a lot (everything I pump plus up to 15 ounces of defrosted milk from my freezer stash a day), so we started today. We did give him a few spoonfuls of it this morning and it was ok.  He didn't eat it all, so I put the rest in his bottle.  He drank it without an issue, but was fussy a little bit after.  Tonight, we just put it straight into the bottle because he was so tired and probably wouldn't have tolerated sitting up to eat.
  • Hmmm, I've heard of cereal making some babies constipated but I don't think that could be the issue if you just started it today.
  • Perhaps he was just reacting to having a fuller feeling in the belly.

DD got SUPER constipated on the rice cereal, so for every Tb of rice cereal I add a tsp of Prune Juice, and BAM no constipation. And I agree with PP that if your Ped didn't specifically tell you to put it in the bottle you should use a spoon, since after all the point of cereal right now it to teach LO to eat from a spoon.

DS's pedi and nurse were adamant about NOT putting the cereal in the bottle. They said that the baby tends to eat it too fast...faster than just a plain bottle and that is why many will be fussy/gassy who weren't previously. As for being constipated, they said to make sure to be giving additional water/and or juice (diluted) once the solids are started since it will need more to pass it through their system and they won't be drinking as much as before.

my doctor was very adimant about not putting cereal in the bottle as well. He said that it's unnecessary unless your baby has a health problem, and that it doesn't do anything to teach your LO how to eat properly from a spoon. He went on to tell me about the risk of choking and told me that DS could get a really upset stomach from it also

  • It must've been the cereal in the bottle!  I tried again with the cereal/spoon this morning and DS was absolutely fine.  No fussiness like he had yesterday.  I guess that answers that!  Thanks!!  :o)
  • I'm glad he's feeling better!
