toddler at prenatal yoga? what do u think?

so I get to prenatal yoga today and a lady has brought her (what looks to be) 13-month old. He proceeds to squeal and run around for the first 30 minutes of yoga. Eventually the lady left.

What do you think of this? Part of me was like, oh cute, and the other part of me was like- a lot of us come here to relax, and I know there are some 2nd time moms there that have said they go to yoga as a little escape, so they can have some "me time." Sorry if I get flamed for this, but do you guys think its appropriate to bring your little one to prenatal yoga? (FYI the yoga place offers mommy and me yoga, but this was not one of those classes)

  • I'm sure it's *very* common... at least she had the presence of mind to leave... since he was disturbing everyone.

I think anything is appropriate as long as it's not disturbing others.

  • Not ok! And I have a pretty well behaved 3 yr old. There are just places that are not ok for little kids and that would be one of them. Salons/spas are also in this category.

  • I would have been annoyed - I like the relaxing atmosphere of yoga...

If he was under control I guess it would be ok, but having a toddler running around distracting everyone is like, the exact opposite of what I do yoga for. And I don't know anyone that has/had a toddler who could realistically stay quiet for that long.

  • nooooo....

i'm pro-kids in restaurants, kids on airplanes, kids in libraries, kids in fancy museums, etc and even i think kids in yoga is inappropriate.

  • I think it's very disrespectful of her.

I think soon to be mommies that are going to these classes need to focus on the poses and their breathing without distractions. Your concept of taking this time as "me time" is totally when I'm getting at. And good for you for doing that for yourself BTW!

When I taught yoga I held special "family friendly" classes but all participants has to particpate or not come. My youngest participants were around four years of age.

  • I would have given her the stink eye.  To expect a toddler to stay still, quiet and well behaved for an extended period of time while Mom is engaged in another activity is just crazy.  I could never see my son being anything close to tame in that kind of environment.

If I took a yoga class I would expect to to serve as my sanity break, not my "lets go somewhere so I can be driven crazy by someone else's child" break.

  • Unacceptable.  The only yoga lass it would be acceptable to bring a child to is a Mommy & Me class.
