why will they take my baby to the nursery?

random question based on the responses in my sposie post below - lots of you said they'll use sposies when they take LO to the nursery...  is that only if you're not somewhere that lets you room-in or should i be preparing myself for people to take my baby and go somewhere with her??

Re: why will they take my baby to the nursery?

  • We roomed in but Quinn still went to the nursery every morning for the pedi to make rounds and check all the babies.  They also took him each night about midnight for his bath and weight check (not sure why they chose that time).  Other than that he was in the room with me all the time.  But everytime they brought him back he was in a clean shirt and sposie.

  • at my hospital, baby was taken for 4 hours for "observation" after birth, then we weren't allowed to sleep with baby in our room if no one else was there (dumb I know but whatever - like we would sleep through something). So for night #2, baby went to the nursery and came back every 3 hours to BF. I would uh...draw out the feedings a bit before giving him up each time.

Some people send their baby away after every meal, or just let the nursery feed them formula while they *** around and "recover".

  • At my hospital the baby stayed in the room with you and only went to the nursery for his circumcision. Then he was right back. The first night they took him to a level down from NICU because he was having issues. But if you baby is healthy then it should stay in the room with you 24/7.
  • All the baths and pedi checks were done in our room. But after reading above I guess it is different for everyone.

My baby never left my room except when she needed a lab test or something and then DH went with her (and she was brought right back).  Our room had scales, etc in it so the nurses did all of their checks right in the room and we bathed her ourselves in our room.

  • my baby did not leave my room without me or my husband directly by his side.  he never went to a nursery really.  they took him to a room for his first sponge bath, but dh went with them and he did the bath.  you can tell them your preferences- i was very very adamant that my child never leave mine/dh's sight.
  • We did room in but they still had to take DD to the nursery to be checked from time to time she wasn't gone long.  I'm not 100% what they had to do each time I was so tired I asked but forget, I also knew DH knew what was going on as that is the hospital he works at, so I was less stressed about knowing what was going on every sec.

It depends on the hospital.  At ours, the baby was allowed to stay in your room full time.  The pedi even did rounds by coming to your room.  The only time your baby was brought to the nursery would be at your request.

  • DD went to the nursery for about 3 hours one night at midnight for a hearing check. Other than that, she was in the room with us.
  • DD went to the nursery for a shampoo, a heel prick blood test, and maybe something to do with jaundice and I think that was it. The pedi checked her in our room and everything else was in our room. They told us we could have sent her to the nursery if we needed a break or something but we didn't use that service.

    Same for us.

Did you take a hospital tour?  They usually told you.  We took one of the hospital we went to and then a closer hospital (one my dr wouldn't be at, but in case of a blizzard or something lol).

They told us at each hospital what the policy was like.  At the closer hospital they do keep the baby in the nursery rounds and I think at another time.

  • At this hospital they took DD everyday for measurement and testing.  I also let her stay in the nursery more this time so I could get some rest with the stress of family visiting and not having DH there as much as I would have liked.  But, I did have her plenty with me during the day and at night she came in for nursing and stayed with me as long as I wanted.  I usually fell asleep with her and the nurses came back for her at a specified amount of time because I was still groggy from the drugs, especially the first day when my pain wasn't really managed.
  • DD went to the nursery for 4hrs. after birth because she was having problems regulating her body temp. and had wonky blood sugar.  After that, they took her twice a day for weight & jaundice check.

this, minus the clean shirt if he didn't need it

  • At ours I think its only be request that they go to the nursery, but I am not positive. It definitely depends on the hospital and their specific policies. Also, if the baby has any sort of issue that they want to monitor they'd obviously want to take them to the nursery.

But this is one reason why we're hoping to go home from the birth center and not go to the hospital at all.... my sister thinks I'm nuts but I'd rather be in my own bed in the peace and quiet than in a hospital being woken up all the time for checks and blah blah blah.

  • With DD they took her to the nursery for her bath, and a lot of other things (her shot, etc).

With DS he did everything in our room except a quick once over by the pedi, that was the only time he went to the nursery and it was for less than 10 mins.

I would say it depends on the hospital.

  • Where we delivered our boys, they only take the baby to the nursery for a hearing test (once). Blood work, pediatrician rounds, bathing, vital signs, etc. were all done in our room. At this hospital they actually do not staff the nursery with nurses; your nurse just takes the baby there if needed. You don't "send" the baby there for any length of time. This is b/c they have a rooming in policy & they said there is evidence that the more time babies spend away from Mom the more likely it is that you might have trouble with BF, so they keep you near your baby as much as possible. I am very much pro-BF but they are seriously like BF maniacs at this hospital. :)
  • DD had to go to the NICU the first night for observation because I had a fever after delivery. They brought her to me to feed her. They offered to give her formula but I declined. We could have her in the room as much as we wanted or send her to the nursery. I kept her in the room with me.

Same thing with us.  And our hospital doesn't even really use the regular nursery anymore, all the moms room in.  They offer "babysitting" if you wanted it but the babies were always held.  I <3 that.

This was our experience, except it was maybe 30 minutes, not 3 hours. I used the time to take the best shower of my life.

  • the only time they took her away was for her bath after she was born. DH went with them to observe and videotape.

I *think* they would have taken her back to the nursery if we'd wanted, but we definitely wanted her in room with us and not out of our sight.

  • With DS, they took him out of the room for his bath, assessments, hearing tests, etc but it was in our birth plan for him not to be removed unless DH or I was with him.  I had a rough birth so it was usually DH who went with him.

With DD, we delivered at a hospital that didn't even have a nursery.  Everything, including the hearing test was done in the room.  She was only taken out of the room without us twice.  The first time was so they could gavage her stomach b/c she was spitting up a _lot_.  We probably could have just let it go but I didn't want to leave the hospital without having the issue resolved.  The second time was at my request.  DH didn't stay the night so he could stay home w/DS and I wanted a couple hours rest.  DD stayed at the nursing station for 2 hours so I could sleep.

I kept DD in the room with me all but a few minutes when they needed to do the hearing test I think it was.

I sent a diaper with her in her bassinet.  :)  No chemicals on my baby.

Side note - i keep typing send instead of sent... it's driving me nuts :|

  • At our hospital, they pretty much just took baby to the nursery if I asked them to or if they needed some kind of exam. The pedi did come in and do an exam in the room once, I think, but it's easier for them to do it in the nursery for whatever reason. With my first, she only went to the nursery the first night when she wouldn't sleep because she had gas or whatever. With my second, I sent her to the nursery the only night we were there because she had kept me up all night the night before what with being born and all. Since I had my toddler at home, I knew I should get some sleep while I could. They still brought her back every 3 hours or so for feedings. To tell you the truth, as long as they bring baby back to bf and don't give formula or anything while in the nursery, take advantage of it when you need to rest. Once you get home you're on your own. I'm not saying to just leave them in there all the time, but don't be afraid to use the nursery. Smile
