2nd Trimester

Low Lying Placenta--who has one??

Dr told me that on the emergency U/S they did last week they found that I had one...and told me there was nothing to worry about.  But then he put me on strict pelvic rest (DH is not so happy with that) and told me I can't work out..not even my Yoga or walking the dogs.

After the planned anatomy U/S (and fetal EKG) next Thursday they will have a better idea of what is going on.

I don't want to Google it....Google freaks me out.  Anything you can tell me?

Re: Low Lying Placenta--who has one??

  • I was literally just reading about that in one of my books. From what I read, your doctor is right, it's nothing to worry about.

Apparently many people have a low lying placenta but it will gradually move up as your uterus grows. I *think* the stat was like only 1% will still have a low lying placenta by the time they deliver. I'm sure they'll just continue to monitor it and make sure it keeps moving up.

  • My SIL had a low lying placenta.  Everything turned out perfectly, no problems.
  • Yep, found out on Sunday when I had to go to the hospital for the 2nd time in a week due to bleeding that mine is "less than 1 1/2 cm" from my cervix. I can do "nothing" - no lifting straining, pushing, pulling, walking (obviously, no sex). Midwife said that as the uterus grows, it should bring the placenta up with it, away from cervix & then I can have a life again (somewhere in the vicinity of 3-4 wks). But, for now, with 4 other kids to care for (one who's not yet 2), I get to have lots of people in to vacuum, dust, clean my bathrooms, etc to stop/prevent the bleeding I've been having. After a week of this, today is my first bleeding-free day.

  • I had a complete previa with the twins. It caused me to have a few massive blood gushes and then an emergency c/s at 32 weeks. I had more weight on my placenta of baby A, tho. Take it VERY easy! It's not that dangerous to have a previa, but why risk it? I don't think I took it easy enough :(

  • Meant to add that most people's previa corrects itself. Mine did not because there was no room for it to go with twins.

  • I also have placenta previa- it's barely covering my cervix, so the dr. isn't concerned.  She's confident it will move up on it's own, since the blood supply is better further up your uterus.  I haven't had any bleeding, or had to stop exercising.

  • I was told I have one too. I have a repeat us in 6 weeks to reevaluate. I wasnt put on pelvic rest though. Hopefully we all move up!
  • I was having really bad cramping and pressure on my vagina a few weeks ago. My dr ordered an ultrasound and my placenta was right on top of my cervix, almost to cover it. She said not to life anything or put anything in there at all! Then I had a follow up just the other day, it has moved right up where it is supposed to. She said it happens a lot and that everything is looking perfect now, she just said it is really common and that my cervix is looking nice and baby is healthy, we even found his little penis at the follow up!!! Dont worry, I am sure you will be fine.

  • I was diagnosed at 12 weeks with low lying and was placed on pelvic rest and by 28 weeks it had 'moved' completely out of the way and now I'm good to go. I was told that 9 out of 10 correct themselves and if not you will most likely need a c-section, don't stress out in all likelihood it will correct itself, GL!
