Do babies really chew on cribs?

I was talking with a coworker about how I'm looking for a hard wood crib that will withstand all the wear and tear from baby and mentioned that a bunch of crib reviews I read complained that huge marks were left in soft wood cribs when the baby chewed on it.  Some even showed pictures and it looked like something my dog would do when she was a puppy!

My coworker cracked up and said that her kids never once chewed on their cribs and she has never heard about babies doing this before.

So is this fact or fiction?

  • My DD didn't but my little brother did.  I think that, just like with anything else, it depends on the individual kid.  But yes, it does happen.

I agree that it seems to vary kid to kid.  Both of my nephews were big time crib chewers.

  • Yes, some do!  Many cribs will come with plastic liners along the side rails, but the ends are not usually covered.

  • I remember when my brother was little, my mom put a plastic guard on the front of the crib rail because he would wake up and start 'teething' on it. But I guess it depends on each kid. ::waits for people with kids to reply:: lol

  • Well I know they make these little clear plastic things to go across the top of the crib so they can't ruin that part. Not sure where else babies would chew? We tried to pick a crib that didn't scratch very easily because I was also told by my friends this can happen.

  • My friends two kids both chewed on their crib. I think it's gross, but there are plastic things that you can put on the rail so they won't chew the wood.
  • MINE DID!!! lol. the inside of my DS crib was all chewed up by the time he was done teething lol.
  • Yes, it will vary by kid. My DD never did, my DS is apparently a rodent.  He's has several spots on his crib that are worn down to bare wood...but it's only like 5 spots that he keeps going back to.

  • It depends on the baby. Our friends baby boy chewed the heck out of his crib and left some major marks.

  • Target online actually sells the crib rail protectors for the front and sides.  They come in a variety of colors, not sure if they were plastic or not, I thought they looked cloth!?

  • They chew on everything.

The reason that cribs show wear is because of the manufacturing regulations regarding the wood and the paint. It's because it's all safe in case your kid goes through that "oral learning" stage, which we all did, we just expressed it in different ways.

I too have heard of this happening. It is better to be safe than sorry in my opinion. Our crib is going to be our daughter's lifetime bed so we need to make sure it lasts the duration. In addition the the plastic teething protectors others here have mentioned they also make very nice ones that velcro on or tie onto the front rail that are a plush and soft material. they even have one with rings attached so you can put teething chewies hanging off of them. I think this is a better alternative than my child knawing on plastic that potentially has hazardous chemicals in it.  And it can be washed!

  • DS did not.  we have a hand me down crib and it has never been chewed.

I thought about getting a hardwood crib as well, and realized it was not worth the search.

  • Mine did. Mine also found a pencil once (he was in a bed by this point but the crib was still in the room too) and dug it into the wood railing and all along with the walls.
  • Some do. They really are so much like little puppies.
  • DS has chewed his crib.  I have one of those protector things on it now.

It is a fact for my DS!!  He has chewed the ever loving shiit out of his crib rail.  It's really gross when I think about it.  We bought a cover for it for #2, but the damage is already done.

ETA: we have a cherry wood crib w/ larger (wider) crib rails.  I had to order a plastic cover that sticks onto the wood. I got it online.

  • My parents just brought this up the other day - my sister and I were little beavers on our crib, chewed it up to pieces.  Obviously, not all kids will chew but it's something I would take in consideration.

i also think it depends. i didn't chew on mine but i did destroy it [like physically tear it apart] before i was 11 months so i moved into a regular bed. my sister chewed on hers. they have those clear protector things that go over the wood if you're worried about it.

  • Harris didn't do it for a looooong time, but I caught him in the middle of it the first time he did it. It left a nasty scratch in the espresso finish of our crib. I immediately put rail covers on it. Those have worked well for us. (and we have a "quality crib" made of good wood...it's about the finish on the wood when it comes to biting).

  • Oh, and now he chews on the gummi rail ALL. THE. TIME. It's probably mostly when he's teething, but he puts his mouth on it all the time when he stands in the crib. Today I caught him chewing at the end of the gummi rail, where it is a tad short on the sides of the crib. I'll have to check to see if he's caused damage to the finish there. I might have to tie something around it so he can't get to the 1-2" of exposed wood there.

  • When DS was first getting his teeth he chewed on his crib - it left some good marks along the top rail. Thankfully he stopped shortly after but the little reminders were all along the top of his crib.
  • I thought kids chewed on everything? I did, but then again I ate the paste too.
  • Fact! DS chewed on his crib and a we also have his teeth marks in our sofa table!
  • depends on the kid- but yes to be on the safe side- you should cover the rails. my DD is a total beaver and ruined her crib.

  • I was a crib chewer and both of mine are crib chewers. Children chew on everything. And our newest discovery- I keep catching my DD licking the walls. (she is so "my child"). I guess in her mind the walls are like Willie Wonka's factory where the shnawzberries taste like shnawzberries."
